ST. CATHARINES—The Niagara IceDogs have signed defenceman Chris Van Laren for the 2007-08 Ontario Hockey League season.

Van Laren, a native of Kingston who played with the North Bay Skyhawks of the Northern Ontario Hockey League last season, was a third-round choice (43rd over-all) of the IceDogs in the 2006 OHL Priority Draft.

“Chris is a very mobile defenceman who plays a physical game down low,” said Dave Brown, general manager of the IceDogs. “He’s shown us that he’s willing to punish his opponents.

“He fits the style of game we will play here (in the Niagara Region) and has the attributes we have targeted in the defencemen we have built our team around.”

In 42 games at the Tier II level last season, Van Laren scored three goals and added 15 assists. He also had 109 penalty minutes.
