IceDogs run out of gas in loss to Oshawa; Generals score three unanswered goals in the third period to put game away
Updated 3 hours ago
Short-staffed because of injuries and suspensions, the Niagara IceDogs continue to struggle.
In seeing its winless streak hit 0-3-0-1 Sunday night with a 7-2 loss to the Oshawa Generals, Niagara fell to 12-10-0-1 on the season. On Saturday, Niagara lost 5-3 in Owen Sound.
"It's the same thing. We played really well in the first period and a half and then we ran out of gas," IceDogs head coach Mario Cicchillo said.
"The young guys only have so much juice in the tank. You start playing three games in 3 1/2 days, they're not used to it at this point in the season."
Oshawa built a 3-0 lead by the 3:33 mark of the second period before goals by Luca Caputi (16th) and Jason Bergeron (2nd) cut the lead to 3-2.
Oshawa scored in the second half of the second period to make it 4-2 and then put the game away with three unanswered goals in the final frame.
Justin Shugg and Brett Parnham each had a goal and two assists for the Generals while John Tavares potted his 23rd goal of the year. Single markers were also scored by Dean Howard, Brett MacLean, Patrick Asselin and Jeff Hayes.
Oshawa out-shot Niagara 35-25 in the game with Andrew Loverock surrendering all seven goals. Backup goalie Adrian Volpe saw his first action of the season making two saves in five minutes of action.
"There's a lot of guys playing out of position because of injuries. On the back end we have guys playing out of position on the power play and penalty kill and it's the same thing up front," Cicchillo said.
The injury bug struck again Sunday in Oshawa when Jordan Foreman broke his nose in a fight when he got rocked by John Quarrie.
But there is good news on the injury and suspension front. Matt Corrente's suspension is now over and Stefan Legein and Alex Pietrangelo will start skating this week. Scott Fletcher is also expected back soon.
In the loss to the Owen Sound Attack, Niagara-on-the-Lake native Alex Friesen was named second star after scoring his second goal of the season and adding an assist. Andrew Merrett had a goal, his fourth, and two assists for the IceDogs; Andrew Agozzino potted his 11th of the campaign.
Scoring for the Attack, who out-shot Niagara 35-27, were Frankie Santini, Joshua Domingues, Wayne Simmonds, Joey Hishon and Matt Carter.
The game was tied 2-2 after two periods before Owen Sound out-scored Niagara 3-1 in the final frame. However, in this game, it wasn't a matter of the IceDogs running out of gas in the third period.
The IceDogs were all over the Attack in the third period until a bad clearing attempt during an Attack power play led to the winning goal, Cicchillo said.
"If we clear it on that play, we still have the momentum."
Owen Sound would add another power-play marker with 35 seconds left in the game.
The IceDogs are in Ottawa Friday night before returning home Sunday at 2 p.m. to host Owen Sound.

Foreman broke his nose in the only fight of the game. If you were watching on tv, could someone please explain why Foreman got the extra 2 mins? It looked like the Oshawa player didnt like the hit that Foreman threw at him (from my vantage point, it looked like a clean hit).
Hope George isnt out for a long period of time, but if he is as tough as they say he is, I bet they will just thow a cage on his helmet and we will see him next weekend.
