FYI, Legein had 2 goals and an assist in todays Red and White scrimmage. TSN had nice coverage of the scrimmage.... Legein was around the net everytime I saw him in the clip. Also, it appears as if he is wearing number 14 in this camp.

Yeah im sure a bunch of other players have the same number, he was 21 in the summer, doesn't seem like he cares too much and also that could be just for the training camp because there are so many players

Congrats to Legein on working hard in the first game. I too noticed ha was around the net on every clip he was in. They said he was by far the best player on the ice that game. Hope he keeps up the hard work!

i'd love to see him on the team. it would be sick to see him representing Niagara on the world stage. everyone watches that tournament at Christmas time. the quality of hockey is extremely high.
rip it up Legein. no doubt he loves the spotlight

Having played well in the Super Series, the roster spot is his to lose. Then, he didn't hurt his chances at the ADT event. Legein's a mature 19,a gamer, and a team leader. Only health issues will keep him off this team.

Esposito, Irving among World Junior cuts
Hockey Canada is in the process of making its cuts for the final team at the World Junior Hockey Championship, with forward Angelo Esposito and goaltender Leland Irving among the players sent home.
Esposito's failure to make the club for a third straight December marks the end of a tough year for the Quebec Remparts centre.
In June, his stock plummeted at the 2007 NHL Draft as the high-scoring centre was passed over by 19 teams before being taken by the Pittsburgh Penguins. Esposito, who led his Remparts junior team to the Memorial Cup championship at age 17 in 2006, was the top-rated North American prospect by the NHL's scouting bureau as late as February. Going into the draft, he was No. 8.
He also missed the 2007 Super Series with a groin injury after the team announced him as an addition for the one-time eight-game event. Esposito joins Dan Cleary with the unfortunate distinction of being cut from the final squad three times.
Irving, a 2006 first-round selection of the Calgary Flames, was another surprise cut as he was a roster player from the 2007 gold-medal winning team and the Super Series team in September.
The two cuts in goal mean that Lewiston's Jonathan Bernier and London Knights goalie Steve Mason will be the goaltending tandem for this year's squad. Bernier, a 2006 draft pick of the Los Angeles Kings, earned a win in the NHL team's first regular season game in London, England and is expected to be the starter.
Also going home is goaltender Tyson Sexsmith, defencemen Andrew Bodnarchuk, Keaton Ellerby and Ty Wishart, and forwards Ryan White, Zach Hamill, Mathieu Perreault, Brett MacLean and Dana Tyrell.
Wishart, a Prince George defenceman who also played in the Super Series, is a first round pick of the San Jose Sharks. Ellerby, a Moose Jaw Warriors blueliner, was taken 10th by the Florida Panthers at the 2007 NHL Entry Draft. The six-foot-four, 195-pounder is a cousin of Phoenix captain Shane Doan. Bodnarchuk, a Boston Bruins prospect, is going back to the QMJHL's Halifax Mooseheads.
Hamill, who plays for the Western Hockey League's Everett Silvertips, was drafted eighth overall by the Boston Bruins in June. Tyrell, another player out of Prince George, played in the eight-game Super Series in September and drafted this summer by the Tampa Bay Lightning. A third-round choice of the Montreal Canadiens in 2006, White has been sent back to the Calgary Hitmen of the WHL.
MacLean is a forward from the Oshawa Generals and is also a linemate of highly-touted 2009 draft prospect John Tavares. Perreault, a native of Drummondville, Quebec who plays for the Acadie-Bathurst Titan, is a sixth-round pick of the Washington Capitals.
A starting netminder for the WHL's Vancouver Giants, Sexsmith was drafted 91st overall in the 2007 Draft by the San Jose Sharks.
Details and additional cuts to follow

CALGARY - Stefan Legein of the Niagara IceDogs and Steve Stamkos of the Sarnia Sting were standouts in the Canadian junior hockey team's first intrasquad game of selection camp Tuesday.
Legein, a Columbus Blue Jackets draft pick, had two goals and an assists to lead White to a 3-2 win over Red.
Stamkos, a 17-year-old projected to be a top pick in the 2008 NHL draft, scored a goal and contributed an assist for Red.
"I thought Steve Stamkos was really good for a young player," head coach Craig Hartsburg said. "He showed a lot of energy and a lot of speed and played extremely hard.
"Stefan Legein, as an older player who played (in the Super Series) in the summer, was probably the most competitive of those players."
Zach Hamill of the Everett Silvertips also scored for White. Zach Boychuk of the Lethbridge Hurricanes had a goal and an assist for Red.
Riley Holzapfel of the Moose Jaw Warriors had two assists for White, while Mathieu Perreault of the Acadie-Bathurst Titan had one. Red's Matt Halischuk of the Kitchener Rangers also earned an assist.
Jonathan Bernier of the Lewiston Maineiacs stopped 11 of 12 shots in White's net for half a game before Everett's Leland Irving came in to turn away 10 of 11.
London Knights goaltender Steve Mason also stopped 11 of 12 for Red over 30 minutes before Vancouver Giant Tyson Sexsmith came in to make eight saves on 10 shots.
Red won the shootout drill at the game's conclusion 4-3 with Boychuk, Saskatoon's Colton Gillies, Belleville's Shawn Matthias and Sault Ste. Marie's Wayne Simmonds scoring on Irving. Holzapfel, Oshawa's Brett MacLean and Quebec's Angelo Esposito scored on Sexsmith.
Hartsburg said no players would be released Wednesday morning, so the four goalies, 12 defencemen and 20 forwards will all participate in another intrasquad game at night.
Two goaltenders, a dozen defencemen and 13 forwards will be named later this week to the Canadian team that will try to win the country's fourth straight gold medal at the IIHF world under-20 men's hockey championship.
Canada opens defence of its title Dec. 26 in Pardubice against the host Czech Republic.

Good article, pretty tough on Esposito to miss it 3 years in a row. I was pretty shocked to see Hamill and Ellerby sent home as well. We do have a great team this year and its going to be a hell of a good time to watch these guys win the gold. Lets Go Canada!

Craig Hartsburg and his coaching staff got one last piece of business out of the way on Friday, naming Calgary Hitmen defenceman Karl Alzner as captain of Canada's national junior squad.
The team also designated forwards Stefan Legein, Brad Marchand and Brandon Sutter and defenceman Logan Pyett as alternate captains.
Alzner and Marchand are the returning players from the team that won the gold medal at the 2007 world junior tournament in Sweden.
The team departed for Europe on Friday to participate in a precompetition camp. Canada will open the tournament on Dec. 26 against the host Czechs in Pardubice.

Since C's and A's are the only one allowed to argue calls and what not, I vote for making EVERYONE on the team alternate captains. If there's no limit to how many you can have of course. Ref makes a bad call - the whole line goes over and surrounds him. :y2:

Especially because of Legein, but also because of the great OHL players on the team, I will make a point of watching most of the games during the holidays...in the past I would normally just watch the sudden death games, and not so much the round robin.
Having Legein on the team is going to be great exposure for the Dogs, especially with him being an alternate captain....excellent for the dogs! I think thats gotta result in some curious onlookers, seeing Legein in the tourney, and then actually going down to the Jack to catch a game, or 20....lol

PUCHOV, Slovakia - As the Canadian players continue to prepare for the world junior championship there are no shortage of lessons to be learned.
Thursday's exhibition game ended up being about discipline and patience in the face of a different standard of refereeing.
"The refereeing was questionable but it's something that we have adjust to," coach Craig Hartsburg said after Canada's 6-1 win over Slovakia. "There was a lot of penalties in the first part of the game.
"Some of them you might question if you were playing back home but over here we've got to understand that those penalties are penalties."
It didn't get in the way of another easy victory for the Canadian team.
John Tavares led the way with two goals and an assist. Shawn Matthias, Matt Halischuk, Stefan Legein and Josh Godfrey also had goals for Canada, which was coming off a 5-0 win over Austrian club team Red Bull Salzburg.
Adam Bena was the only Slovak to score on Jonathan Bernier, who finished with 23 saves in goal.
There was plenty of things the Canadian coach liked about the game.
"I thought we played with a lot of energy and competed very hard for most of the night," said Hartsburg. "Our penalty killing was very strong and I thought Jonathan Bernier was real solid for us too."
Canada faces Finland in an exhibition game Saturday before the Dec. 26-Jan. 5 championship opens in the Czech Republic.
The exhibition games aren't just about allowing the players to feel more comfortable. The coaching staff has also been using the advance time in Europe to get a feel for the team and start making line combinations.
"Every day we're learning more about our team," said Hartsburg, who is coaching for a second straight year. "We're learning about the combinations and what will work and some of the things that aren't working.
"That's one of the reasons why we come over here early and get these exhibition games in."
Matthias is one of the few players that wasn't part of the Canadian team that played in the Super Series against Russia this summer. The 19-year-old from Mississauga, Ont., says his teammates have gone out of their way to make him feel welcome.
With less than a week to go before the start of the event, the Canadians are starting to feel like a unit.
"There's definitely a lot of pressure but we got a close bunch here and we know what we want to do together," said Mathias. "We want to bring home a fourth consecutive gold medal.
"We're going to do everything we can to make Canada proud."

EXHIBITION GAMES CONCLUDE FOR CANADA AS WJC IS SET TO BEGIN
CHRUDIM, Czech Republic – Team Canada scored a power-play goal, shorthanded goal and two even-strength goals to beat Finland 4-2 in exhibition action in preparation of the 2008 IIHF World Junior Championship on Sunday.
Shawn Matthias (Mississauga, ON/Belleville, OHL) led the way with two goals as Canada improved to 3-0 in exhibition play in front of a crowd of 2,500. Canada will now prepare for the start of the tournament on Boxing Day, when the three-time defending champion takes on the Czech Republic.
Finland outshot Canada 33-21 in the game, but Steve Mason (Oakville, ON/London, OHL) was solid in net for the win.
Canada’s special teams took control of the game in the first period. Drew Doughty (London, ON/Guelph, OHL) scored a power-play goal at 5:01 when his slap shot from the point beat Finland netminder Riku Heleniu. Then, at 12:10, Matthias scored a shorthanded goal when he one-timed in a pass from Matthew Halischuk (Mississauga, ON/Kitchener, OHL). Canada, despite being outshot by Finland 8-7, led 2-0 after 20 minutes.
Finland came on in the second period and ended up with a 13-6 advantage in shots on goal in the middle frame. But Canada’s Brad Marchand (Hammonds Plains, NS/Halifax, QMJHL) scored just 25 seconds into the second to make it 3-0. Marchand completed a nice play set up by Claude Giroux (Ottawa, ON/Gatineau, QMJHL). Finland cut into the lead at 8:47 on Niko Aaltonen’s power-play goal.
Early in the third, Finland’s Ville Lajunen scored another goal with the man advantage to cut Canada’s lead to one. But Matthias restored Canada’s two-goal lead with his second of the game at 8:29 and that was it for scoring.

Didn't sound like Legein was given much ice time - I hardly heard his name at all! :confused1: Although I did see him mixing it up after the whistle when he was on the ice.
I'm not sure if the Czechs had a good team but they are usually up there as far as hockey superpowers go, so I thought if we could get a good outcome agains them, then we've got a good team.

Legein played a fair bit. He's on the top PK line and takes a regular shift. He wasn't a huge factor today but he played well and didn't make any mistakes. Mason will be in net tomorrow but I am fairly certainly unless he gets a 40+ save shutout it'll be Bernier the rest of the way. The game is at 4pm Czech time so Bernier needs the rest.

yeah he plays a big penalty killing role and has been doing an excellent job so far. he drew 2 penalties as well today
I thought he played his role well today. Everyone comments on his ability to frustrate other players and make them take penalties. In game 1 he took a dumb penalty like he does here, chirping and staying involved in scrums after the other guy has the penalty. Today, though he played well I thought. No points, but I think his line is the most consistent line. Him and sutter, are on PP, PK and they are the second line. they have started that line both games also.

Mason just let in a real weak goal to start... Canada has picked it up since then though.
The one thing about Mason is that if you need a save late in the game, he'll make it.
Legein scores empty net to ice game. Good for him, he played a great game and had good chances.

I like the player of the game awards ( Nice JUGS )
The empty net was just icing on the cake.
Makes up for his most embarassing moment in hockey.
This just hit my email, I'm posting this for non season ticket holders that may not get emails from Jon.
Good Afternoon
First off, Happy New years to everyone from the IceDogs organization. I hope you all had a very safe and happy holiday season.
I wanted to inform everyone of a program Hockey Canada has put into place for their players in International Competition. They have created an opportunity through their site in which fans can send a message to the player of their choice. At the end of each day, all messages are then printed out and provided to the player for them to read. We thought this would be a great opportunity for the fans of Niagara to show Stefan Legein that we are watching and supporting him while he is away. Although he has not put up a lot of points through the first few games (his empty-net goal from today aside), he has played very admirably in filling a strong penalty kill and checking role alongside Brandon Sutter.
For those interested, please visit the Hockey Canada site via the following link (http://www.hockeycanada.ca/) (http://www.hockeycanada.ca/)) and look for the line "E-mail Team Canada" on the homepage. Click on this link and you will have the opportunity to email the player of your choice. Please take a minute or two and send Stefan your best. They are going to be in tough to get past the Americans tomorrow and would definitely appreciate hearing from you.
Thanks and have a great day!!
Cheers,
Jon Kursikowski

I kinda wish it was Canada/Russia to add to the drama, but I really don't care - as long as we win!
I was a bit scared in the 1st period because the US was matching us for speed, and it looked like anyone's game. Then those quick #3/4 goals just destroyed them. Felt sorry for 'em a bit actually.

Good start but like Army said...Legein just went off...
Yeah, Canada scoring is great, but if they lose Legein they lose a major art of the defensive game.
And we lose one of our best players.

And yes, were is Legein's "A"? I wonder if it was taken from him for taking too many dumb penalties? I know he had a stretch there were he went off a couple of games in a row for taking stupid penalties (I know one was spearing).
Good Question, hopefully he learns he remembers not to take those penalities when he comes back.
WDF - is Aggy planning on Sunday and who do you think he should play with considering his great play.
Also, do you know if they are planning anything for him as a congrats at the begining of the game.

I would assume he will be back playing for the Dogs Sunday. As for a ceremony I would think he would be honored prior to the game, I would hope they do.
As for line mates... I Like him with DeSousa and Merritt. They make a good "energy" line.

Legein was injured in period 1 of the gold medal game today. Went off with what looked like a shoulder injury.
I hope it's nothing real serious!

looks like a dislocated shoulder to me.Thats the first thing I thought as well. I would say 2-4 weeks at best.
did he not hurt it prior to leaving. I recall him leaving a game at the Jack ealry for a similar injury. Anyone else recall that.

He hurt a shoulder right before the russia series but healed in time to play. I dont believe Leggy has had a problem with that shoulder since, but I could be wrong. I do recall him leaving a game and being in a sling but I think that was before the ADT Russia challenge.
just announced seperated shoulder

Congrats Team Canada, but I have to say, it looks like Sweden could have grounds to be upset, looks like the Canadian player interfered with the Swedish goalie. (Dont shoot me for this opinion, just how it looked to me, and yes, I was cheering for Canada to win).
It was great to see Legein out on the ice celebrating!

That's exactly what happened. They originaly named 4 associate captains and planned on rotating who gets to wear them...
Great to see his mug all over the TV; the camera and the announcers can't get enough of him! What a character!
Hopefully, like everyone has already said, he won't be out of commission very long...
The whip cream was priceless...... Some how we need to get that video played when he comes back so all the ice dogs fans can see it....

17 games for 95$? how is that even possible!
Congrats to Legein, looks like it'll be a good team this year!
this is months later so sorry to revive this thread (but wasn't around for it)
I wonder how inflated the cost is for ottawa
i cant find package prices, but what I did find said starting at about 28 bucks a ticket...
that is pretty steep multipled by 17 games (and even more with the 31 game package they were offering)
