The same Kitchener Rangers who just came in a beat the Dogs while missing 8 of their regulars ( 5 of which are playing in the World Junior Tourney). Just made a trade for Team Canada/London Knights goalie Steve Mason. The trade is supposed to be made official tommorow.

My guess is we just watched the Memorial Cup Champions tonight!

This should be in the other forum....

However the Ranger fan in me is ecstatic! All the pieces are in place for a long playoff run and a strong showing at the Cup in May. This is going to be an exciting spring for yours truly.

FishFan beat me to the scoop. As I was leaving the Jack, a person in the know told me about the trade tonight. Kitchener was the last place London wanted to trade Mason, but the Rangers gave the Hunters everything they wanted. I am glad we didnt mortage our future for a goalie that would be with us for just half a season.

I'd have to assume they keep Unice and Parks for next season since Mason will be gone. Either way, a scary good team has gotten much better.

I heard they gave up two players and two drafts from a Kitchener fan. I have idea who they gave up or how high the drafts were.

I believe they game up Parks, he wasnt dressed tonight.

Parks, Varone (a 1990 forward) and Tarasuk (a 1989 defenceman) were scratched "without reason" and are involved. Parks to Kingston, the other two to London. Nazem Kadri (1990 forward) is from London as well, and has been strongly speculated to be included in this trade, but perhaps not until the off season as a "player to be named later". He played tonight. London may not have enough player cards to take him this year, and the Rangers would definitely want to keep him for their run this year.

How was Kingston involved in this trade?

How was Kingston involved in this trade?

London needs a goalie to replace Mason. London gets Jason Guy from Kingston (and remember Kitchener shipped their goalie Murray to Kingston earlier). Kingston gets a draft pick in return for Guy.

Kitchener then moves Parks to give Kingston two ex-Ranger goalies. Kingston also gets a 5th rounder, and future considerations. Kitchener gets defenceman Ben Shutron in return, who has been injured for a few months but is a 19 year old impact player. This replaces a defensive body in Kitchener, as they had to give up Tarasuk to London.

So is Guy now the Knights starting goalie?

Either Guy or Caesar, likely splitting half and half. I would personally give Caesar more playing time as he is the future (much like I want to give Volpe more playing time here).

Yeah I agree with you on Volpe, but he is going to be sent down as soon as Lobsinger comes back.

Who do you give the win to in this trade? Kitchener or London. Seems to me this might be a trade where both teams win.

If the Rangers win the Cup this year, it is a good trade. If they don't, it's a bad one.

If Kadri is involved and continues to light up the league, London wins for the next three years.

The point of trades is coinciding win-win scenarios. This one seems to work for both.

I heard at the start of the third, I thought about running over to WDF to let him know but was too busy :P.

One thing that gets lost in all this is Kitchener screwing over another talented goaltender...

John Murray their start goalie gets shafted when the Rangers sign Unice out of NCAA and now they trade for Mason to screw over Unice who was playing very very well. Yes, Mason is a gamebreaker but I could tell (and was told) Unice was not a huge fan of this move most likely the reason he let in those 3 goals in the 3rd. He looked totally dejected coming off the ice at the end of the game... feel really bad for the kid because now he's stuck as the backup and is a very talented goaltender.

That makes total sense.... Unice looked to be well on his way to a shutout during the first two periods. He looked distracted in the third.

Yeah that's when he found out, I don't know why they didn't just wait til the end of the game.

The only "screw over" is really Unice. Murray was injured at the start of the year, and his playoff performance last year left a lot to be lacking. He had to know that he was on his way out very early on. At least he gets to keep playing in Kingston rather than sitting on the bench.

I feel for Unice though. He was plucked from the US, got shafted by the US World Junior team, and now this. His confidence should not be hit too hard though, he's still got the #1 GAA in the league, and is a definite #1 goalie for ANY other team in the leauge, and will start next year.

It's like Plymouth last year with 2 of the top 4 goalies in the league in Smith and Neuverth. One has to see the bench for the good of the team, but overall the team is stacked with both.

I don't know I mean when you are a number 1 goalie and you know you are a number one goalie theres its not fair to have to sit on the bench. It's not like he can go anywhere else though so it looks like he's stuck there now.

Unice didnt get "shafted" by Team USA... They actually did him a favor. There was no way Unice was going to get playing time over Smith. Smith is the US's number one goalie by far. Yes, there is a lot of prestige being named to the national team, but in the long run, not being picked for the team will only make him a stronger goalie.

Zador is the future (drafted 1st round last year and playing pretty well in the U-17 right now). Heming probably backs up Guy now...Cesard could be out of the picture (headcase anyway).

London comes out big in this trade...they weren't getting out of the West with Mason so he had to be traded. I agree QuietOne that Kitchener must now win the Cup for this to have been worth it - or their fans could be pretty ticked off seeing Kadri, Varone and Tarasuk in green for the next few years.

That said, Deboer had to make this move. Going into the pressure filled Memorial Cup with an 18 year old (Unice) with no playoff experience could be a disaster on home ice. Getting Mason doesn't guarantee anything but when you host, you need to pull out all the stops.

haha yeah. the people sitting behind me at last nights game were yelling at the rangers goalie "You're getting a little cocky for someone who's getting replaced."
