Shawn Matthias of the Belleville Bulls was called up to the Florida Panthers Friday. In just his second game, he scored 2 goals. Whats even more impressive than his two goals is that his 21:18 TOI was 5th on the team. How does a guy go from playing OHL hockey to almost leading his team in goals AND TOI???

He will most certainly be sent back down to the Bulls once the Panthers are healthy (just like Mason was returned to the Rangers recently). I know, two games does not make a career, but I would expect big things from this guy. Oh btw, he was a Wings draft pick but the Panters INSISTED on Matthias being included in the Bertuzzi trade.

I seen that on Sportscenter...Insanely happy for the guy. Shows how much talent there really is in this league.

This call up had me puzzled, when I saw him with two goals on saturday night, during the HNIC intermission scoreboard.

I can somewhat understand an NHL team needing to dip into the juniors for a goalie on an emergency injury recall situation, since, obviously teams do not have as many goalies available to them, as they would forwards.

but to recall a forward, for injury recall, seems awfully strange to me! Maybe they are showcasing him for a potential trade.

Anyways, good for him, sadly, we missed him in December when the Bulls were here, as I believe that he was with the WJC team.

they must hjave seen him play in the world junior tourney, he is extremely responsible in all areas of the game. there was no downside of calling him up. the only way he returns back to junior is if they don;t want to pay him his full salary. if he plays 10 games he gets paid for a full season so they may not want to do that

I don't see them trading him...They insisted he was in the Bertuzzi trade. I think they brought him up because he is just that good.

I think they called him up for two reasons:

1) due to injuries
2) to showcase him to the fans. they are trying to generate interest in the team and sell season tickets. Matthias is Floridia's Kane and Toews. He is the future of the franchise.
