Good for Volpe to win his first start. What a comedy to have the glass replaced by plywood. I'm sure they'll have it fixed for Sunday (they better), and hope they're better prepared for the future. Imagine this happening on national TV! Here's the write-up from the Falcons website...

Falcons shatter Blades
25-Jan-2008 · 9:50pm
Friday night was a first for many hockey fans inside Jack Gatecliff Arena. A pane of glass behind Falcons netminder Adrian Volpe was cracked during the warmup before the game and wasn't noticed until the end of the first period. The problem, however, was that the City of St. Catharines did not have a replacement for the larger panes attached to the boards that open for the Zamboni.

The result was atleast a 40 minute delay as arena staff scrambled to find a piece of plywood to replace the glass. Once the temporary fix was in place and the second period was underway, it was close to 9:00pm, 90 minutes after the opening faceoff. (Falcons facts: The first player to take a shot and hit the plywood was Falcons captain Kevin Floris.)
Back in the first period, Falcons forward Stephen Ceccanese scored the opening goal of the game with just 43 seconds left in the period while on the power-play. JT MacDonald and Kevin Floris assisted on the goal. The period ended with St. Catharines owning a 1-0 lead, while also outshooting the Wheatfield Jr. Blades 22-7.

The second period finally kicked off with a Wheatfield goal to tie the game 3:55 into the period. Matt Terreri (APM) scored Wheatfield's first goal, unassisted. The Falcons grabbed the lead again, this time from Chris Stevenson, on the power-play, from Andre Abayof and Daultan Leveille. The Falcons owned the shots on net at 42-12 after 40 minutes of play.

Daultan Leveille scored his 26th of the season at 6:16 of the third period to give St. Catharines a 3-1 lead. Brad Jackson assisted on the marker. Wheatfield bounced right back to come within one goal when Ian Chapman beat Falcons netminder Volpe at 7:24 while on the power-play. Blades defenseman Chris Williams assisted on the goal.
The Falcons notched another two goal lead in the third period, jumping up 4-2 over the Blades with Ceccanese's second goal of the game at 10:38, with helpers from Kevin Floris and Vladimir Bessonov.
JT MacDonald grabbed a power-play goal to give St. Catharines a 5-2 lead before Wheatfield scored a power-play goal of their own to make the final score 5-3 for the Falcons after 60 minutes of play. One of the longest Falcons regular season games in recent memory, the game concluded at 10:15pm.

Attendance inside Jack Gatecliff Arena Friday night was announced at 560 fans.
The Falcons next game is Saturday, January 26th, when they travel to Port Colborne to face the Sailors. Game time is 7:30pm sharp!

Volpe wins first start with Falcons

Adrian Volpe could be excused if he felt a little like a visitor in his home rink Friday.
The surroundings were the same, but the uniform, the dressing room and even the players bench were all different.
“It was a little bit weird,” the 17-year-old netminder said following first start as the St. Catharines Falcons edged the Wheatfield Blades 5-3 in a Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League, Golden Horseshoe Division game before about 500 fans at Jack Gatecliff Arena.
Volpe, who made his Falcons debut in the third period of a 7-0 loss last Saturday in Fort Erie, picked up his first win in red and white after being sent down from the Niagara IceDogs of the Ontario Hockey League.
Volpe wasn’t tested often — he faced just 21 shots — but was good enough to pick up the victory.
“The adjustment was tough because the play is a little bit slower — it’s still quick — but it’s slower,” Volpe said. “It’s a different style. I find it a lot more scrambly, so I’ve got to adjust my game on that.
“The guys backed me up today so I could get my first win for the Falcons.”
Volpe did a solid job for the IceDogs in a limited role as a backup to Andrew Loverock. But when Niagara picked up overage goalie Sebastian Dahm for the stretch drive and Lucas Lobsinger returned from the injured list, Volpe was the odd man out — at least in the short term.
“I kind of had an idea (he might be sent down) because even though they told me I was playing really well, they wanted me to play more games,” said Volpe, who had a 4-2 win-loss record and 2.96 goals-against average for the IceDogs. “Dahm is a great goalie and I won’t play much there, so they sent me here to get more game time and experience and hopefully be a big part of the team next season.”
Volpe will likely get a quick return to the IceDogs Sunday when they host the Sarnia Sting after Losbinger was ejected for a fight in Kingston Friday night. A game ejection carries an automatic two-game suspension.
Volpe, who skated with the Falcons in the summer, appears to have brought a good attitude with him.

“When you get sent down, I’ve heard a lot of guys get negative on themselves and then they start to play worse,” he said. “You can’t do that. You have to stay positive.
“I have a lot of support behind me. I really like it here (with the Falcons). They’ve really treated me well and I glad I’m here.”
The addition of Volpe, to go along with incumbent Steele De Fazio, who has played much better recently, gives the Falcons the best 1-2 punch in net in the Golden Horseshoe.
How the playing times shakes out is still up in the air, according to head coach-general manager David Cole.
“(I) don’t know, that’s something we’ll address with Paul (goalie coach Paul Gallardi) and both the kids,” Cole said. “Our concern was to get him in and practising with us and get adjusted.”
The win halted a three-game losing streak for the Falcons who moved to within two points of the Niagara Falls Canucks for first place. The Falcons have a game in hand on the Canucks which they will make up tonight in Port Colborne.
The Blades dropped to 4-35-2-0.
St. Catharines led 1-0 after one period and 2-1 after two. The Falcons out-shot the Blades 56-21.
There was a significant delay after the first period because a broken piece of glass behind one of the goals. The second period did not start until 8:58 p.m., a time when normally the third period is about to begin.
A replacement could not be found so a piece of wood was instead into the opening. A replacement piece of glass was then brought in from Haig Bowl and installed following the second period.

Falcons facts: Falcons forward Riley Sheahan was presented with the High Performance Award from Ontario Hockey Association president Brent Ladds.… Ian Braun was ejected for a check from behind on Daultan Leveille late in the first period. Leveille was shaken up, but returned to action in the second period.

I just re-read that article. Says Lobsinger gets the boot for Sunday's game, so Volpe will back up Dahm.
