What would you all think about this trade? Mats Sundin to the penguins for their first round pick and the rights to Luca Caputi. Finally the leafs would have that big power forward winger they have been missing for centuaries...Let me know what you think?

If you want to kill Caputi's career, go right ahead.:D

I moved this post out of the game day thread and put in here, in Leafs Lounge.

Bad trade... Penguins are't the type of team to go after a high profile player like Sundin.

Besides that if the leafs can only get a first round and rights to Luca, they lose in that trade big time. The leafs need more then that for there captain.

They may get a player and two (1st and 4th round?) picks but not much more for a rental.

True, but if I was the buyer, this is what I would be looking for from the leafs....

Mats, with a 2 yr contract extension and a utility player for XXXX..

I don't think anyone touches him without knowing they may be able to have him for the next year or two.

And for Leaf fans, I hate to say this, but you need this, you don't need Mats rumours in the summer of coming back, you need to focus on building a new team.

This isnt Baseball. There are very few trades (at the deadline) that hinge on the ability to re-sign a player once they receive them.

If you were a buyer and those were your criteria for trading for Mats, you wouldnt be getting him.

If the Leafs move him, I would wager they are going to get a utility type player and two picks for him.

exactly.... I can't see any team wanting a guy that doesn't want to play there.

Lets be honest here, talent gets you so far in the NHL, but wanting to play for the team an out the effort in, takes you to cup.

If he is not 100% committed to play for me, I should pick up someone that does.

Mats has made it clear so far, TO is his only option.

It happens all the time in the NHL. A team trades for "the missing piece to the puzzle" veteran. After the season is over that vet either goes back to his original team or signs with somebody else (Smyth and Leetch to name two). I am sure there are a few teams (your Wings for one) out there that would love to have Sundin for the playoff run.

Here is something that might work...

Matts and a utility, to Calgary for Alex Tanguay, Carsen Gyermyn, a 2nd pick in 08 and either Keith Aulie or Warren Peter.

Pietrangelo to the Leafs! THey can build around him, then make him the next longest-running Leaf captain :D

If I were you, I would find a way to get Petro not Caputi.

Nothing against Caputs as he's one of my favourite dogs but that simply is not enough for Mats. A first round pick and a fourth round draftee? No thanks.

Caputi needs to play D, you can see he can, but is seems he takes some time off when he is deep in our end on D

if we trade to the pens, maybe something like

To Pens: Sundin, Antropov

To Leafs: Staal,1st,2nd,Caputi

but i would rather try to trade sundin to the ducks so we can have edmontons 1st

I dont think there is anyway the Pens trade Staal. Also, they have built through the draft very well of late, they wont give up a 1 and a 2.

Staal is having a terrible year.

Isn't that more of a reason to trade the 1st/2nd because they have drafted very very well lately?

No I dont think it is more of a reason to make the trade. Honestly, I think that they are contenders in a very week East this year without Sundin and Antropov, provided Sid comes back.

Nah, the Leafs need to sell everything of value to clear up tons of cap space, then put a killer in for Crosby once his rookie contract is done, then build around him. He'll be worth so much Pitts will have to trade off their entire team just to keep him at his price. If the Leafs can sell off everything the need a Crosby to start the rebuilding - a young star to build around. (of course I know this will never happen)

The funny thing is - the cap was put in to help teams like Pittsburg at the time. Now having a high-paid superstar is going to put THEM in a jam. anyway, I'm off topic...

The Leafs need defence too so maybe they can get Pietrangelo this year :) Then do a trade for Caputi, and sign Swift. Basically the leafs should just make the Icedogs their farm team :D

Burke has already gone on record saying he isn't interested in Sundin. I don't see Staal going anywhere cause hes having an off year. He'll be back for sure. His 29 goals in his rookie season was not a fluke.
