Was talking with Volpe at practice the other day and he told me he was getting a game this weekend. Well he didnt play last night so that leaves tomorrow night in Welland. I may just head to the Welland Arena after the Dogs game to see if in fact Vople does get the start. Would be nice to get a few people out there cheering for him!

trust me, if you were at the game you wouldnt be saying that. I was there. The Falcons hung him out to dry. NO defensive help at all. Most of the second was a Welland power play. Of the 8 goals, I think that 1 maybe 2 were his fault.

Here's the write-up from the Falcons website:

Sunday no day for Volpe
11-Feb-2008 · 9:55pm
Sunday was a wakeup call for Falcons as the playoffs rapidly approach. They skated into Welland to face the Jr. Canadians Sunday night only to be turned away with an 8-3 loss. Adrian Volpe recorded his first loss in net of the season for the Mountainview Homes Falcons.

St. Catharines took a 1-0 lead in the first period with Daultan Leveille's 28th goal of the season, only to allow 5 goals in the second period at the hand of the Canadians. Three of those five were power-play goals, but none-the-less the markers silenced the Falcons bench.

The Falcons added two goals in the third period, from Dylan McInnis and captain Kevin Floris, but Welland added three more to overwhelmingly defeat the Falcons with a final score of 8-3. Shots were even 36-36 after 60 minutes of play. Matt Hansell notched the win in net for Welland.

Scoring for Welland Sunday evening was Jeremy Reese (2), John Aitken (2), Ryan Joseph (2), Adam Duliban, and Kyle Gillier.

The Falcons next game is at home inside Jack Gatecliff Arena on Friday, February 15th, when the Niagara Falls Canucks visit St. Catharines. Game time is set for 7:30pm sharp.

Catch the Falcons complete their home-and-away series against the
Canucks when St. Catharines travels east on the Q.E.W. to Niagara Falls on Saturday, February 16th. Game time from Memorial Arena is 7:30pm.

Here's a slightly better article of the game from the Standard. Interesting to see Volpe referred to as the backup. It's not really a surprise as DeFazio was the main man on this team playing just about every game, but I hadn't heard Volpe called the backup prior to this...

Falcons fall flat in loss to Welland

Head coach Todd Clayton's words didn't fall on deaf ears following the Welland Junior Canadians' disappointing 8-4 loss to Thorold in the Golden Horseshoe Junior Hockey League team's Thursday.
"Coach really busted our (chops) about our defensive zone coverage," said a pleased Ryan Joseph after scoring two goals as the Junior Canadians dominated the St. Catharines Falcons 8-3 Sunday at Welland Arena." We played pretty badly, so tonight was a huge character win for us."
Take away a first period, in which the defending playoff champions took a 1-0 lead while outshooting Welland 14-6, and it was the Canadians, not the Falcons, who wound up as the best birds on the ice.
The hosts came out flying at the start of the second, and they didn't touch back down until the final whistle.
The Junior Canadians were 4-for-11 with the man advantage - and scored two more when they were a man down. The Falcons converted only one of their eight power-play opportunities.
John Aitken and Jeremy Reese scored two goals each as Welland improved to 26-18-0-1 with four games remaining in the regular season.
Daultan Leveille, Dylan McInnis and Kevin Floris replied for the Falcons.

It was the battle of the backups in goal with Matt Hansell picking up his fourth win against two losses for Welland and Adrian Volpe playing his third game for St. Catharines.
