Richard Zednik Cut by Skate

It's truly amazing that this doesn't happen more often. I hope Richard a speedy recovery, no one deserves this. It's the Clint Malarchuk incident all over again. From what I'm hearing he's in stable condition in the hospital right now.

During the latter part of my hockey career we used to wear padded neck protectors around our neck that did up with velcro.

I remember a game where Darren McCarty got kicked in the forehead by a skateblade and a chunk of his forehead flesh/skin got cut out, and they had to pick it up off the ice and re-attach it after. And the joke was that they found it in the "Face off" area.

But yah, during pileups, scraps that go down to the ice, and other times when blades come up, it's been very lucky that major incidents don't happen more frequently.

neck guards have been manditory in OMHA for over 20 years. By the time you get to this level of hockey(nhl) you had better understand the dangers. More players have had careers ended by pucks to the face than skate blades to the neck. The NHL will never impliment full cages, so i wouldnt expect them to mandate neck guards either.

Ya I know, they always will be now for the OMHA. And as you said about the NHL, they will never make either of those items mandatory. It would create to much controversy.

Zednik was released from the hospital and is now back home in Florida. His recovery is nothing short of amazing. The treating Dr. said that the only thing you can see is some bruising (I would assume the stitches as well). He was feeling so good that he asked for and received wings before he left Buffalo.

Haha, I heard that story on the news actually. It's good that he's ok though.
