Nothing major yet... Hossa's name was being tossed around (hehe, not to the Leafs of course).

Fletcher's going to be in tough today. He can't trade Pintos for Porches. Hopefully he can at least clean house of anyone over 25 and get some future picks or young prospects. This roster needs a fresh start.

BELAK IS GONE

Wade Belak has been traded to Florida for a 5th round pick this year. Sure this is supposed to be a good draft year, but 5th round? C'mon.

If there was one person on the roster I didn't want to see gone, it was Wade! :scared:

Wow I really haven't been paying attention to players the last 2yrs or so. I used to be able to tell you every state of the top 10 scorers, the home towns and previous teams of all the well-known players, etc...

Since the Leafs started their downhill dive I've really paid less attention to the NHL and wow is it ever showing! I don't even know who the big names are anymore!

Huet (spelling) to Washington. I guess Price is the man in Montreal now.

How do you trade your #1 goalie for a someone who may not even play on your team???? There has to be more to this trade than what is officially announced so far...

How? by making your number 2 your number 1. It was just a matter of time before Price became the number 1

Sure, no real disagreement with Price being the #1 goalie of the FUTURE, but this year, Huet was #1 and they trade him for a 2nd rounder. Many 2nd round picks don't make the big club, so again, how do you trade a CURRENT starting goalie for someone who may not even play for you in the future? If they couldn't get more than that for him, then they shouldn't have traded him away for a proverbial bag of pucks!!

because they couldnt sign him. They have been trying to sign him to a multi-year deal since last fall but the two sides couldnt connect. So instead of letting him go like Briere and Drury (and get nothing in return for them), they traded him and got something in return

Phil Margonis
02-26-2008, 06:21 PM
exactly right WDF. i'm a buffalo fan so i know a thing or two

golisano is cheap so we couldn't keep him. so considering that we did a good job getting something in return. bernier is a young power forward with lots of upside. plus we got a 1st rounder and the draft is very strong this year.

the only other deal where a 1st rounder was involved was i nthe biggest deal of the day- hossa. draft picks are more valuable than every in this salary cap era. so to get a 1st in a good draft yr and a good young forward is a good job by regier.

soupy is a great player tho and i'm sad to see him go

While I am not a fan of the Sabres, I do follow them because they are close and because of Roy. I use to watch him when he played for the Kitchener Rangers.

PM your analysis is dead on. Atleast they have 2 first round picks next year in a deep draft.

Belak, Gill, Kilger....not bad at all if you ask me.

I think in the off-season they'll be dumping a lot of players, buying out salaries, etc... Like Fletcher said, the team will look a LOT different come September.

yeah im surprised the leafs got anything for those bags of garbage haha
good job by fletcher.
leafs could have sped up the re building process by like 2 seasons had Mats waived that trade clause so if i was a Leafs fan i'd be frustrated. if any of the other 4 idiots would have waived their no trade clause that would have helped too. not fletchers fault tho

leafs_fan77
02-27-2008, 10:59 AM
Belak's job isn't to score, he isn't a bag of garbage. His job is too hit hard and to protect his teammates when needed. He did his job well, I think. Maurice just never found the line-up space for him (which he should of, he's not a great coach).

RioBravo
02-27-2008, 10:34 PM
Im not a big Belak fan at all but calling Gill and Kilger bags of garbage isn't right. Gill is awesome on the PK and Kilger is a solid 4th liner, he can chip in some points and hes a pretty heavy hitter. If you think Gill went for about the same as Huet...its not that bad of a trade.

leafs_fan77
02-27-2008, 11:25 PM
Yeah, those guys arn't garbage either.

Kilger was a healthy scratch tonight for Florida as Belak was playing and a got a whomping 5 minutes and 9 seconds of ice time lol.

i'm not lookin to get into a great debate here as kilger and belak aren't worth that but come on these guys could be easily replaces by joe schmo in the minors and just were in fact.

I was talking with someone in the IceDogs organization a few weeks ago and they told me that Sandy is now ranked on the pre-draft rankings. Not sure what number he is though. I think he is definitely worth a mid to late round pick.

On the NHL Central Scouting list (according to TSN, Hockeyforum.com, and CBS sportline.com), Barry is ranked 205th amongst North American skaters. Pretty low, butat least he's on the list!

It's great to see Sandy on the list

Those lists mean absolutely nothing though. I'm reading this book called Future Greats and Heartbreaks by a guy that followed the Columbus Blue Jackets around for the whole pre draft, draft and after stuff. The teams surely look at those lists but they are by no means the bible of hockey prospects. Teams do their own scouting work and a guy like Sanderson could be 209th in NA on one list and 100th on any given NHL teams "list" where as other teams might not even give him the time of day. Your draft ranking is solely based on where you are drafted is what it states in the book.

Just a little rant.

Its not an objective list so we are left to the mercy of those that put that particular list together. Everybody's draft board is different. While most may say Stamkos is #1, who goes in what order after him is open to team needs and debate.

They usually are wearing a windbreaker or someother coat that has the teams logo on it. And their clipboards/paper has their teams logo on it as well.
Its a good guess that when you see someone standing/sitting up high in the corner or ends and they are writing on a clipboard they are a scout. I dont see them much at the Jack because I seldom walk around once I sit, but have seen them at other locations throughout the league.

Another good indication of a scout -- when a controversial call is made, a goal scored etc...they're stone-faced - pretty much no reaction; write a few notes etc. Not that people have time to peruse the 3145 fans at the Jack looking for this behaviour while there's a game on :001_tongue:

Maybe Belak got what is better for him. He is doing his job properly with Florida as the team is letting him. They are now on a 7 game winning streat and I think are 7-2 since they required Belak. Just goes to show that a role player like Belak can make a difference, if they actually let him play HIS game. I hope Florida squeezes into the playoff's this year~!
