With the 2007-08 Ontario Hockey League regular season in the books, 16 teams will now turn their attention to the first round of the OHL playoffs, which opens on Wednesday.
The top eight teams in each conference qualified for the playoffs with the division winners receiving the top seed in each conference.
The Kitchener Rangers won the Hamilton Spectator Trophy as the OHL’s regular season champions for the first time since 2002-03 after setting new franchise records with 53 wins and 110 points. In the Eastern Conference, the Belleville Bulls hold the top seed after setting new franchise marks with 48 wins and 102 points in the regular season.
The Rangers are the host team for the 2008 MasterCard Memorial Cup, which will be held May 16-25 at the Kitchener Memorial Auditorium. The Rangers will host the champions from the Western Hockey League, Quebec Major Junior Hockey League and the OHL. If the Rangers win the OHL championship, the Eastern Conference champions will also play in the tournament.
Here is a look at the first round OHL playoff matchups.
Western Conference
Kitchener Rangers (53-11-1-3) vs. Plymouth Whalers (34-28-2-4)
The trio of Justin Azevedo (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=3913), Nick Spaling (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=4354) and Matt Halischuk (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=3993) was a dominant force early in the season but Spaling missed time with mono and Halischuk has played just nine games since scoring the winning goal for Canada’s juniors. They are all in the lineup now to bolster a deep cast that also includes top prospect Mikkel Boedker (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=4951), former first rounder Nazim Kadri and gritty veteran Mike Duco (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=3652). Scott Tregunna (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=4273) has struggled to find the net consistently since coming over from Owen Sound but is a quality scorer that will provide depth for the playoff run. All-Star Yannick Weber (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=4568) is as dangerous as they come on the powerplay and the arrival of Ben Shutron (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=3891) helps take some of the pressure off. The group of Matt Pepe (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=3457), Dan Kelly (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=4352) and Robert Bortuzzo (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=4575) are effective. World Junior hero Steve Mason (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=4249) was brought in to solidify the Rangers’ championship hopes and has come as advertised.
Chris Terry (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=4256) has been a sensational offensive performer with the Whalers this season scoring 44 goals and 101 points. Captain Andrew Fournier (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=3820) has blossomed with 35 goals and 77 points and sophomore A.J. Jenks (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=4486) is fulfilling his promise with 27 goals and 56 points. The Whalers have depth with the likes of Joe McCann (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=3812), Vern Cooper (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=4484) and Kaine Geldart (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=4485) as well as newcomer Ryan Hayes (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=5052). They are confusing to follow, but both Tyler Browns have enjoyed solid rookie seasons. Czech rookie Michal Jordan (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=4893) is the real deal and will be counted on to step up after the team lost overager Wes Cunningham (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=3014) to injury. Jeremy Smith (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=4260) became the undisputed number one when Neuvirth was shipped to Windsor. He plays an efficient and effective style.
Spotlight players: Azevedo won the OHL scoring race with 43 goals and 82 assists for 125 points. The 19-year-old from West Lorne, ON racked up 51 points during a 21-game scoring streak earlier this season and scored his 100th career goal in February. Smith has picked up nicely after helping the Whalers win the OHL championship last season. He has three shutouts this year and recently signed with the Nashville Predators. The 18-year-old from Brownstown, MI has the best save percentage in the Western Conference.
Season Series: Kitchener won the season series 4-0-0-0.

Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds (44-18-2-4) vs. Saginaw Spirit (33-25-8-2)
The additions of World Junior champion Wayne Simmonds (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=4580) from Owen Sound and Matt Caria (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=4331) from St. Mike’s gives the Greyhounds offensive depth when combined with captain Dustin Jeffrey (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=3960) and veterans Brandon MacLean (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=4024), James Livingston (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=4493) and Arron Alphonso (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=3942), who have all scored at least 20 goals this season. Josh Godfrey (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=4018)’s cannon of a shot gets most of the headlines, but he plays a dependable game at both ends of the ice and has become one of the league’s top all-around defenders. Veterans Andrew Campbell (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=4292), Jacob Muzzin (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=4287) and Michael Quesnele (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=4415) round out a solid group on the blueline for Canadian World Junior coach Craig Hartsburg. Kyle Gajewski (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=3155) is in his third season as the Greyhounds’ top stopper. The overager is unflappable in the crease and brings a calming presence in big games. He has the best numbers in the Western Conference this season.
Despite being in a rebuilding mode, the Spirit enjoyed a solid first season under new coach Todd Watson. The veteran trio of Jack Combs (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=3912), Ryan McDonough (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=4000) and Tomas Zaborsky (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=4599) has been a big part of that success, combining for 119 of the team’s 236 goals this season. 18-year-old rookie Tyler Murovich (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=4860) has also contributed along with second pick Jordan Szwarz (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=4861). The Spirit has a youthful blueline that could develop into one of the league’s best in short order. T.J. Brodie (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=4602) has been solid in his first full season and rookie Adam Comrie (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=4863) already plays a veteran style of game. Garrett Sinfield (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=4149) and Joe Underwood (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=4511) provide some veteran leadership. Veteran netminder Ryan Daniels (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=4097) has been a solid presence for the Spirit while newcomer Ed Pasquale was brought in from Belleville to be their goalie of the future.
Spotlight players: Greyhounds’ captain Jeffrey has enjoyed a tremendous season in the Sault, hitting the 30-goal plateau for the second straight season. The Courtright, ON native is a proven playoff performer and played in the OHL All-Star Game on home ice in February. Overage forward Combs has been one of the OHL’s top offensive performers throughout the season. The St. Louis native has dramatically improved on his previous best scoring totals of 10 goals and 33 points. He is a big centre that is difficult for defenders to contain.
Season Series: Sault Ste. Marie won the season series 5-1-0-2.
Game 1 – Fri., March 21 at Sault Ste. Marie 7:30
Game 2 - Sat., March 22 at Saginaw 7:11

Windsor Spitfires (41-15-7-5) vs. Sarnia Sting (37-29-2-0)
Overager Bradley Snetsinger (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=3717) has put up career numbers in his final OHL season, while helping to bring along the team’s talented group of young forwards that includes Joshua Bailey (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=4253), Greg Nemisz (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=4557) and first rounder Taylor Hall (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=4895). They added Justin Shugg (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=4815), another promising young forward, from the Generals in January. Adam Henrique (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=4558), Matthew Bragg (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=4051) and Jordan Nolan (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=4221) are all capable of scoring and give the Spitfires depth heading into what is sure to be an emotional playoff run. Ryan Ellis (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=4892)’ progression as an OHL defenceman has been meteoric. The Spits’ second rounder is already an elite powerplay quarterback and has poise beyond his years. Veteran Elgin Reid (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=3010) plays a gritty game that works well in the post-season while Harry Young (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=4216) and Mark Cundari (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=4550) make life miserable for opposing forwards. The Spitfires have given up very little in the swap of Michal Neuvirth (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=4479) for Jakub Kovar. Kovar is 14-3-2-1 since arriving in January.
Sarnia’s offence begins with Steven Stamkos (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=4595), but he is surrounded by veterans that know how to put the puck in the net. Frequent linemates Justin DiBenedetto (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=3997) and Devin DiDiomete (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=3995) are enjoying career seasons and overager Vladimir Nikiforov (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=4278) is starting to come around after missing six weeks with a concussion. When he’s healthy, Nikiforov will draw some of the defensive attention away from Stamkos. NHL prospect Jamie Arniel (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=4211) has also put together a solid season. Captain Ryan Wilson (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=3279) is the main man on the Sarnia blueline. He regularly logs 25-plus minutes a game and leads all OHL defencemen with 71 points. Former first round pick Mark Katic (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=4240) is also an elite defender while Steve Ferry (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=3987), Steve Whitely (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=4057) and Jordan Hill (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=4959) round out a solid group. All-Star Andrew Perugini (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=4268) came over from Barrie in January and gives the Sting a legitimate stopper heading into the playoffs.
Spotlight players: Hall, the second overall pick in the OHL Priority Selection last May has played like anything but a rookie this season, scoring a team-high 45 goals in 63 games. He also helped Ontario win the gold medal at the World Under-17 Championships in January. There isn’t a lot that hasn’t already been written about Stamkos in his two OHL seasons. The top pick in the OHL draft is a likely bet to hold the same honour in the NHL draft this June. He is a creative offensive dynamo that also plays a solid defensive game.
Season Series: Sarnia won the season series 4-2-0-0.
Game 1 – Thurs., March 20 at Windsor 7:30
Game 2 - Fri., March 21 at Sarnia 7:35
Game 3 - Sun., March 23 at Windsor 7:00
Game 4 - Tues., March 25 at Sarnia 7:35

London Knights (38-24-4-2) vs. Guelph Storm (34-25-5-4)
While Patrick Maroon has been the centrepiece of the Knights’ offence this season, NHL draftee Akim Aliu (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=4199) and newcomer Phil Varone have also performed consistently. Overager Jadran Beljo (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=3027) is solid, but has been in out and of the lineup this season. Sophomore forward Justin Taylor (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=4736) is an emerging star and former first round pick Philip McRae (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=4585) is growing as an NHL prospect. Overager Sean O’Connor contributes at both ends of the ice. U.S. World Junior Kevin Montgomery (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=4719) has built on a solid first season with the Knights and promising newcomer Steven Tarasuk (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=4576) has been outstanding since coming over from Kitchener and leads the team with a plus-29 plus-minus rating. Czech defender Vladimir Roth (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=4878) has also been a solid contributor this season. Veteran Jason Guy (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=4217) and overage pick-up Jhase Sniderman (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=3066), a former OHL Cup MVP, have been a reliable tandem in the second half of the season.
Sophomores Brandon Buck (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=4512) and Anthony Nigro (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=4514) are enjoying standout seasons and will be Guelph’s go-to performers for the foreseeable future. Veteran centre Luke Pither (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=4196) has taken a step forward and Harrison Reed (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=3988) has proven that he can score at this level. Captain Rafael Rotter (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=4213) sets the tone for most games with his tenacious style that usually leads to scoring chances. Rookies Peter Holland (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=4894) and Taylor Beck (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=4898) both look ready to break out. World Junior champion Drew Doughty (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=4215) is billed as the number two prospect for the NHL draft because of his outstanding play at both ends of the ice. He is out in every critical situation and thrives in a pressure environment. Veteran Michael Caruso (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=4017) fits the definition of a shutdown defenceman to a tee. Thomas McCollum (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=4518) has been outstanding in the Guelph goal, posting four shutouts this season and rising to the top of the NHL’s draft prospects list.
Spotlight players: Maroon was been the OHL’s top scoring freshman this year, leading the Knights with 35 goals and 55 assists for 90 points in 64 games. The St. Louis native enjoyed a five point game (3G, 2A) against Ottawa in October and played in the OHL All-Star Game but must get past a six-game point drought to start the month. Doughty was a standout at the World Junior Championships, helping Canada win its fourth straight gold medal. He has the ability to control a game with his play from the back end. A former first round OHL pick and likely a top two NHL pick this summer.
Season Series: The season series was tied 3-3-0-0.
Game 1 – Fri., March 21 at London 7:30

Eastern Conference
Belleville Bulls (48-14-4-2) vs. Peterborough Petes (28-37-0-3)
The Bulls are led up front by an impressive group of 19-years old, including centre Shawn Matthias (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=4029), captain Matt Beleskey (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=4006) and veterans Cory Tanaka (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=3838) and Keaton Turkiewicz (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=4111). ‘07 NHL draft picks Bryan Cameron (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=4323) and Eric Tangradi (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=4521) have also contributed up front along with newcomer Jan Mursak (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=4600) and overager Adam Perry (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=4035). Andy Self helped the Wolves advance to the OHL finals last year and brings valuable playoff experience. The Bulls’ defence is anchored by overage defensive stalwart Geoff Killing (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=3695) while P.K. Subban (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=4325), Shawn Lalonde (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=4525) and Nigel Williams (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=4700) all have the ability to create offence from the blueline. Dependable veterans Nick Pageau (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=4327) and Chris Mifflen (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=4371) are on the injured list. One of the team’s biggest questions after the graduation of Kevin Lalande (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=3759) was answered big time by Murphy. Veteran Parker VanBuskirk is a more than capable back-up.
The Petes are in the midst of a rebuilding effort that is paying off with the development of young forwards like Pat Daley (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=4282), Brett Theberge (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=4638) and Zach Harnden (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=4229), who will form a solid nucleus next season. John Armstrong (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=3839) and Justin Soryal (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=3973) provide a veteran presence and are helping the younger players learn what it takes to win on a consistent basis. Zach Bogosian (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=4626) has developed into one of the OHL’s elite defenders despite being just 17-years-old. The Massena, NY native will be the cornerstone of a solid team next year. Arturs Kulda (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=4630) eats up minutes and rookies Jamie Doornbosch (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=4721) and Chad Lowry (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=4927) have already proven that they can play at this level. Veteran Trevor Cann (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=4236) is an elite goaltender, but he has struggled down the stretch, dropping six straight decisions in February. He won three in a row after that and the Petes will rely on him to back them to playoff success. Jason Missiaen (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=4625) has been solid and is being groomed for the starter role.
Spotlight players: Murphy emerged as one of the league’s top netminders in his first season as Belleville’s starting goalie. He led the league with a 2.24 goals against average and represented the Eastern Conference in the OHL All-Star Game in Sault Ste. Marie in February. Sophomore defenceman Bogosian plays an aggressive game that has made him one of the most sought after prospects in the NHL draft. His competitive nature sets him apart from his peers. He will likely be the Petes captain next season if he doesn’t stick in the NHL.
Season Series: Belleville won the season series 6-0-0-0.
Game 1 – Wed., March 19 at Belleville 7:15
Game 2 - Thurs., March 20 at Peterborough 7:00

Brampton Battalion (42-22-1-3) vs. Barrie Colts (28-34-3-3)
Former first overall pick John Hughes (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=4005) exploded offensively after being moved from centre to right wing earlier in the season. He enjoyed an 11-game scoring streak in January and February that included 21 points. Top end NHL draft prospect Cody Hodgson (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=4504) became an impact player with the Battalion very quickly. He leads the team with 40 goals this season. High profile acquisition Cory Emmerton (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=3892) got off to a slow start with Brampton after a bout with mono but has been back to his high scoring self with 16 points in 12 games in February. Sanguinetti eats up a lot of ice time on a blueline that also includes captain John deGray, an effective shutdown presence. Bryan Pitton (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=4086) and rookie Patrick Killeen (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=4699) have practically shared the workload right down the middle. Pitton has posted better numbers - including three shutouts - and will be the number one guy in what is expected to be an extended playoff run.
After the mid-season trade of Vladimir Nikiforov (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=4278) to the Sarnia Sting, the Colts went to an offence by committee format that has worked well so far. Alex Hutchings (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=4658) is their top scorer while Slovak centre Tomas Marcinko (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=4661) has performed at a point-a-game clip since arriving last season. Sophomore winger Stefan Della Rovere (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=4656) has picked up nicely after a solid rookie campaign and rookie winger Daniel Michalsky (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=4276) has a solid 17 goals and 41 points. Veteran Cory McGillis (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=3935) has a team-high 10 powerplay goals. The Colts’ blueline includes veteran Tyson Aitcheson (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=3018) along with a bunch of promising youngsters including Brian Lashoff (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=4664), Jaroslav Kruzik (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=4854) and Ryan Gottschalk (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=4663). It looks like a core that will develop into an elite group in the coming years. Michael Hutchinson (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=4665) stepped into the spotlight after Andrew Perugini (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=4268) was moved to Sarnia in December. He won four of five starts through the end of February.
Spotlight players: Veteran defender Sanguinetti has enjoyed a tremendous offensive season racking up a league-high 29 goals from the blueline. The New Jersey native has scored 17 times with the man-advantage. He played in his third straight OHL All-Star Game in February. Hutchings came into his OHL career as a promising young forward, but no one expected things to come so quickly for the Toronto native. He scored a goal and five points in half a season last year and leads the team in scoring this year with 29 goals and 54 points.

Oshawa Generals (38-17-6-7) vs. Ottawa 67’s (29-34-2-3)
The Generals have been led offensively this season by the dynamic duo of Brett MacLean (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=3982) and John Tavares (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=4302), who have combined to score 101 of Oshawa’s 290 goals this season. MacLean was the first OHLer to reach the 50 goal and 100 point plateaus this season, but had a slow stretch with just five points in 10 games heading into March. Overage pickups Patrick Asselin (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=3025) and Kevin Baker (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=3533) have been welcome additions and Brett Parnham (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=4176) has been a regular contributor. Captain Eric Regan (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=3981) anchors an impressive group that also includes top NHL prospect Michael Del Zotto (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=4615), one of the top offensive producers in the East. Overager Ryan McGinnis (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=3083) brings OHL championship experience from Plymouth last year and James DeLory (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=4034) is a solid contributor. The Generals secured Michal Neuvirth (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=4479) in January and hope the Czech netminder can win a second consecutive OHL championship. Darryl Borden has had a productive season.
Logan Couture (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=4284) and Jamie McGinn (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=3946) are among the elite forwards in the OHL and form a devastating combo when they are both in the lineup. Veterans Matthieu Methot (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=4290) and Thomas Kiriakou (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=4116) play a high energy game and provide the 67’s with outstanding scoring depth. Rookie Michael Latta (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=4803) has chipped in offensively and veteran Adam Zamec (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=4334) is enjoying a career season. Sophomore Tyler Cuma (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=4536) has emerged as a top NHL draft prospect because of his solid game at both ends of the rink. Local product Julien Demers (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=4738) has enjoyed a standout second season, representing the team in the All-Star Game. Czech defender Martin Paryzek has also been impressive and will help the 67’s have one of the top bluelines in the East next season. Brian Kilrea’s crew has gone with a rookie tandem of Adam Courchaine (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=4798) and Chris Perugini (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=4799) this season. Courchaine has looked good handling the bulk of the work.
Spotlight players: Tavares may not have reached his 18th birthday yet, but the Generals’ star has already enjoyed record setting performances. He is a threat to score on every shift and has committed himself to being defensively responsible. He’s also a great penalty killer. San Jose Shark’s first rounder Couture has enjoyed a productive season despite missing nearly two months with a concussion. When he and McGinn are both in the lineup, they form an impressive duo that puts pressure on the opposing goal.
Season Series: Oshawa won the season series 4-1-1-0.
Game 1 – Fri., March 21 at Oshawa 7:35
Game 2 - Sun., March 23 at Oshawa 6:05

Niagara IceDogs (42-25-0-1) vs. Mississauga St. Michael’s Majors (31-32-2-3)
Luca Caputi (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=3957) has turned in an all-star effort with the IceDogs during their first season in St. Catharines. He joins captain Michael Swift (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=3712) and veteran Jordan Foreman (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=3649) among the IceDogs’ gritty forwards. Stefan Legein (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=4089) is one of the league’s top two-way performers and plays a game tailor made for playoff success. His return to the lineup will be a huge boost for the IceDogs’ playoff run. Top prospect Alex Pietrangelo (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=4543) has already developed into one of the league’s top two-way defenders. He scored 13 goals and 53 points while amassing an impressive plus-29 ranking. Drew Schiestel (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=4367) and Josh Day (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=3966) are also reliable performers on a blueline that misses injured stalwart Matt Corrente (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=3878). Sebastien Dahm was a playoff hero with the Sudbury Wolves last season and has been sensational since coming to the IceDogs in January. He went on a stretch that included 12 wins in 14 starts to help the IceDogs grab home ice in the first round.
While Kaspars Daugavins (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=4634) is clearly the Majors’ sparkplug again this season, he has had help from a cast that includes captain Jesse Messier (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=4448), veteran Michael Pelech (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=4358) and standout rookie Casey Cizikas (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=4965). Heralded prospect Jordan Mayer (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=5044) will form an outstanding one-two punch with Cizikas down the road but has struggled to find a consistent scoring touch so far. Zac Rinaldo (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=4733) and Kyle Neuber (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=4636) keep the opposition honest. Rookie Cameron Gaunce (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=4967) quickly established himself as a quality two-way defender for the Majors. He leads their blueliners with 10 goals and 39 points this season. Sophomore Tim Billingsley (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=4621) has progressed and second rounder Brett Flemming (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=4966) joined Cizikas on Ontario’s gold medal winning Under-17 squad at Christmas. Chris Carrozzi (http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=4618) has effectively carried most of the load for the Majors this season after serving as their backup last year.
Spotlight players: Veteran pest Legein has struggled with injuries since helping the Canadian juniors win gold. He exploded back into the lineup with two points and seven penalty minutes in his first game back on March 2 and scored a pair of goals three days later. Latvian winger Daugavins has been a bright spot in the Majors lineup during their first season at the Hershey Centre. He has been a streaky scorer this season and is looking to consistently find the score sheet to help the Majors into the post-season.
Season Series: Niagara won the season series 7-1-0-0.

Game 2 - Sat., March 22 at Plymouth 7:05

Game 3 - Mon., March 24 at Sault Ste. Marie 7:00
Game 4 - Wed., March 26 at Saginaw 7:11
Game 5 - Fri., March 28 at Sault Ste. Marie 7:30 *

Season Series: Brampton won the season series 3-2-0-1.
