Needs a few luxory boxes for corporate sponsorship, a nice press box area (the nicer, the more likely we can get more televised games) .... and more importantly, make sure there's an area for the banners, like this year's Memorial Cup one ;-)

Pretty cool but why is the first row of seats so far from the ice and why do we need two scoreboards? (one at centre and one on the wall at the end)

Gotta have a video scoreboard too

Keep going on in Byran!!! That's awesome!!!

I love the brighter colours on the walls - much better than gloomy Brampton/Missy colours. And the 2-tier layout is *MUCH* better than just one big lower bowl stretching away from the ice.

Just need a restaurant/snacks areas around the back of the lower bowl, and instead of all the steel trusses going across the ceiling, maybe we could keep it like the Jack with big curved gurders and a wood panel roof :)

Keep working with it!! That's awesome!

The jack actually has a 2 x 4 roof. They are stood up on edge. You could probably build an entire sub division out of the amount of 2 x 4s. Good old conservation

In our Barn this year, there are 2 classes of Fans!
For one, they added a few Metal Boxes and quarantined the entire upper North side of the Arena with new modern spacious Water Closets that are unattainable by the second, the unwashed masses, until after the game and soiled by the fortunates!
Those said masses can still use the 2 lower washrooms that have needed upgrading since I was a kid in the 50's. If you're male, or have no qualms, you can still use the back parking lot. Many Do!
Instead of pleading with the rest of the uninspired tax payers, I believe we should have an OHL Lottery, where the cash is awarded to the most needy team for a new Arena.
The way Ontario loves gambling for needy causes, we should all have new Sports Complexes by December. LOL ;)

I think i posted this in another thread somewhere, but i can't seem to find it. Regardelss.. *IF* they decide to build a new rink, and *IF* they decide to put it where the jack is, then for the 2-3 years that construction is under way, where will the dogs play? NF mem. is slated for closure i think, and clearly the jack will be gone. So that leaves...?? The 4pad? Thorold arena? enlighten me

tbone
04-05-2008, 10:37 AM
The NF mem should be closed by some time after the new four pad is built. The main rink at the new four pad holds 2000, however if construction were to take place at the end of the 08-09 season, there could be a chance that the icedogs play in Niagara Falls, there not called the niagara icedogs for nonthing. If they do come to Niagara Falls here is some facts about the Mem from the city of Niagara Falls website.
Seats-2809
Standing-292
And ramps for the disabled.

"The Niagara Falls Memorial Arena is a few blocks away from the horrendous tourist sleaze of Clifton Hill and Lundy's Lane in downtown Niagara Falls, yet the rink is located in a quiet residential neighbourhood."

By the time a new rink would be in the works! The Dogs could play out of the The Bob Gale Complex in the Falls @ Stanley and Thorold Stone which is to hold about 2500 without standing room. To be completed by September 2009!

There only 2000 seats going in the new arena not 2500.

i would love to see the dogs play in the falls while they build a new arena on the current site. it would help broaden the fan base in Niagara Falls. Alot of people ask me about the dogs, they don't know anything about the team. most people dont even know where they play. The Review does a crap job of covering the dogs, instead devoting the front page to the Canucks and various high school athletics.

if they don't want to build on the current site, there is always the big parking lot behind the old building on st.paul street. they could easily fit a new rink there and maybe a small garage. i made a mockup awhile ago, i'll post it up later.

either way, i love the jack but i don't like the jack...if you know what i mean

i would love to see a new arena here in the city. But i dont see it happening. I've heard lots of people (non-Ice Dog fans) talking about this and they are pissed. More taxes, more money. We spent millions on the 4 pad (which i use for skating) and i can not see approval for another one. They should have incoropated a 5,000 seater in the 4 pad. Would have been perfect. LOts of parking, etc. Easy access from QEW, 406. The citizens will be outraged of their taxes going up again for a new arena. Our taxes are ridiculous enough with the water/sewer rates.

But i would LOVE for a new arena to be built. I want to see the OHL continue here. We deserve a team.

The JAck has tons of history and i love it. But let's face it, it needs to be put to sleep. Its old, there is no parking, its takes too long to get around the building during intermissions. Plus the ice surface is too small.

Sorry, every time someone posts that I have to say I disagree. 5000 seats at the 4-pad would be the WORST new arena we could possibly get. It would be 5000 seats in the most personality-less, un-unique, plain old grey box building that you could possibly get. I really couldn't see people wanting to go to a big boring building like that. That main rink at the 4-pad is as lifeless/plain/no-frills as you can get.

In order to attract big crowds on a regular basis a new building is going to have to have unique qualities to it, something that people will like to look at from the inside. Simply sticking 5000 seats in a "BiWay Building" just won't attract people.

yes, it is a plain looking building but they should have planned it better by proposing a 5,000 seater. They could have made it look nicer to reflect on the main 5,000 seat rink.
Easy for us (as hockey fans) to say yes to another arena for the Ice Dogs but lets not forget about the 1,000s of others who'll say no to it who arent hockey fans. As always our city will take a step back (if they reject the new arena). This city seems to live in the old age and not progress into the new age.

Remember, at the time there was no NEED for 5000 seats for anything. All we had was the Falcons and they were quite comfortable at the Jack. There was no news or even hints at an OHL team. When they build the 4-pad it was under the notion that Jr. B would be the top level of hockey here for the next hundred years (which could very well be true if they don't build the new rink this time around)

The original proposal for the 4pad was as a spectator but was pooh poohed by the public before it ever madi it to counsel so it was brought forth that a "practise facility" be addressed with the intention of shuting down the aging Haig bowl and possibly Bill Burgoyne thereby only creating a practice facility that could accomodate the growing demand for ice time. In short...4pad never made to counsel as spectator because the residents didn't want it (vote people vote). It will be easier now to try and address with the influx of the Ice Dogs and their insuing support. Keep in mind though...this community is a largely senior one... and the seniors tend to be the ones that vote...voters vote in counsel members...counsel members want to keep their positions and vote in counsel on behalf of their constituants.

Its still going to be a tough sell...Good start though having McMullen in the along with Peter Gill and the other young guys who can recognise the potential for the overall economic impact of such a facility

I hope we get it

Captain K

A new arena would be awesome, but I worry about "municipal" support as well. If those people who weren't already peeved by the construction of the 4-pad (or any other project) hear that they will now have to pitch in cash (through tax or heaven-forbid, an arena levy on the tax bill) for a new facility, they will now be coming out in force to protest what I'm sure many of them will be saying will become a white elephant. I'm at least for the moment eased by the fact that Bob Gale (& friends) have come forward to begin a private pledge of support for the rink, but am still concerned what the ney-sayers are going to do to derail this idea.

Tim Horton Memorial Arena.

The best part about that name would mean that Tim Horton's would be DEAD ;) People would be forced to go through the super-strenuous activity of making their OWN coffe!!! ARRrrrr!!! God forbid. (although I'm sure the population would be wandering the streets aimlessly for years like the living dead in search for brains before they realized that their are machines available for public sale that allow them to make coffee in their own homes!) Hehe. reminds me of the time we were in online chat and intermission came up and I said I'm was going to get a coffee - and someone instantly replied "Mmm, Timmy's!" - it was COMPLETELY unfathomable that I could magically create my own coffee here at home.

Ooohh.. the PLAYER. Yes, but the only problem with that, is half the kids these days don't even know he was a player. They think "Tim Horton's donuts/coffee" and that's it.

I'm sticking with the Niagara Gardens

I was thinking of something Icedog-oriented, but that would limit it too much to one team/one use. Too one-thing-specific. The Gardens would be better suited in attracting other stuff like concerts, other sports, etc...

I'm just not sure how 'linked' to the city he was. Sure he died here on the QEW, but that was more out of fluke chance than anything else. Usually memorials are put up in a city that was personally important to that person, no?

Now, on the other hand, I'm ALL FOR a nice big bronze statue along the side of the highway for everyone to see on a daily basis. I just think the arena name should be something that reflects the region.
