what was with murray sayin Pittsburgh threw theiur last game so they could meet them in the 1st round? that reeks of desperation. thats sad murray has to use that to try and motivate his team

It’s good news for Patrick Thoresen.

Flyers’ general manager Paul Holmgren gave an update on the winger on Saturday afternoon during the team’s practice at the Kettler Ice Complex. Thoresen is possible to play in Game 2 of the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals on Sunday (2:00 p.m., NBC).

“The ultrasound they did last night was actually good news,” said Holmgren. “They did another ultrasound this morning and everything checked out okay. He’s now back at the hotel just resting up. As far as his status, it’s going to come down to how he feels, but he’s a possibility for the game tomorrow.”

Thoresen was hit in the groin by a slap shot by Washington’s Mike Green in the third period of Game 1 on Friday night and had to be helped to the locker room.

“Obviously we’re all thankful it’s not more serious than it is,” added Holmgren.

Ummmm....owww?

Brendan Shanahan on playoff hockey

"We recall Brent Gilchrist. He was getting needles, as awful as this sounds, in the groin. We would hear him screaming before games an in between periods, and he was, you know, maybe 4 or 5 rooms over, and we could hear him screaming. He played until the muscle just separated from his bone, and he couldn't play anymore"

well.. i think thats a bit more sad than having all those cups in montreal... sens fans however with the fact that they have never won a cup and being the biggest choke artists in the universe.. and losing every playoff series they have ever played to the TML may actually have it worse off than the leafs fans who are just used to it .... ur right tho we are in a win-win situation with the being expected to lose thing tho..

98 saves...3 goals against. That's gotta do wonders for your Save %

And Kyle Greentree of the Phantoms had 17 shots on goal, and there were 4 others on his team that registered 10+

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. ... The Philadelphia Phantoms have defeated the Albany River Rats, 3-2, at the <st1>Times</st1><st1> Union</st1><st1> Center</st1> in<st1> <st1:city w:st="on">Albany</st1:city>, <st1:state w:st="on">N.Y.</st1:state></st1> , in the longest game in the 72-year history of the American Hockey League.

Ryan Potulny (http://stats.theahl.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=1397)’s goal at 2:58 of the fifth overtime period gave the Phantoms the win and a 3-2 lead in the best-of-seven East Division semifinal series. Game 6 is Saturday afternoon in Philadelphia.

The winning goal was scored at 12:39 a.m. EDT on Friday morning, five hours and 38 minutes after the game began.

Philadelphia took an incredible 101 shots on goal in the game, and Albany’s Michael Leighton (http://stats.theahl.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=394), who won the Aldege “Baz” Bastien Award as the AHL’s outstanding goaltender during the 2007-08 regular season, made 98 saves, believed to be an AHL record. The Phantoms’ Scott Munroe (http://stats.theahl.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=1183) stopped 65 of 67 shots to earn the win.

Albany’s Kiel McLeod (http://stats.theahl.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=81) netted a pair of goals in regulation, both coming in the second period to give the River Rats 1-0 and 2-1 advantages.

But the Phantoms’ Jared Ross (http://stats.theahl.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=437) responded to tie the score on both occasions, including a tally at 15:13 of the third period to send the contest to overtime.

It remained deadlocked at 2-2 for more than three hours of real time before Potulny finally ended it in the fifth extra session.

The marathon surpassed the previous longest game, a 2003 Calder Cup Final game between Hamilton and Houston that went 14:56 into a fourth overtime. It was also longer than all but three NHL games ever played.
