I just checked to see how the Gens managed tonight. They were blown out 11-0 to end their season. I thought the Gens were an awesome team so that tells you how good Belleville must be.
2008-04-23 Bulls claim East title as season ends for Generals
By Roger Lajoie
The Oshawa Generals season came to an abrupt end Wednesday night, while the Belleville Bulls earned a spot in the Ontario Hockey League finals and the Memorial Cup at the same time.
Matt Beleskey had three goals and an assist, A.J. Perry had two goals and two assists and Mike Murphy made 28 saves to lead the Bulls to a crushing 11-0 win over the Generals Wednesday night at Yardman Arena.
The Bulls win the best-of-seven Eastern Conference Championship series 4-1, winning the Bobby Orr Trophy as East champions for the first time since 1999. They will face the Kitchener Rangers in the OHL Finals after the Rangers defeated the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds 5-0 Wednesday to win the Western title series in five games. Both teams will play in the Memorial Cup.
It was a crushing way to end the season for the Generals, who advanced to the East final for the first time since 1999. Oshawa’s top ranked power play could manage just one goal in 25 opportunities in the series and were 0-for-3 Wednesday, while Belleville scored six power play goals in 12 chances in the series finale.
“The result in this series certainly wasn’t the one we wanted,” Oshawa coach Chris DePiero said. “We can take solace in how far we’ve come in the past four years, making it to the Conference final, but it’s always tough to lose.
“We were hoping our offence would erupt tonight, especially on the power play, but full credit to them (the Bulls) for the way they played and the discipline they showed.
“We just couldn’t get anything going offensively when we had the chances, and we gave them a lot of opportunities.”
Oshawa captain Eric Regan thanked the generals fans for their support after the final loss.
”It’s tough to put into words, being so close,” Regan said. “We’ll just have to take some time to try and get over this.
”I’d like to thank all of the fans in Oshawa on behalf of all of the players, they have been fantastic to us. We came in last place three years ago and they stuck with us all the way.
”We’ve got a terrific booster club, they were at every playoff game, that is awesome. It’s one of the reasons the Generals organization is one of the best and most respected in the entire CHL.”
The Bulls took a 3-0 first period lead and never looked back, out-shooting the Generals 47-28.
Cory Tanaka set the tone early, opening the scoring at 4:24 of the opening period, and Perry added a pair of power play goals later in the first.
Shawn Lalande, Jan Mursak, Keaton Turkiewicz Andrew Self and Stephen Blunden scored the other Belleville goals.
Daryl Borden made 36 saves in goal for the Generals and performed well throughout the playoffs, coming in for the injured Michal Neuvirth in Game 5 of the second round and getting the Generals into the Conference finals.
