(um, I made the other forums NHL talk instead of Leaf talk... if anyone wants to talk about their non-Leaf NHL team in those forums, please do so!)
SUNDIN...
Reminder to all that tomorrow is his self-imposed ultimatum where he will be making a decision on whether to: play for the Leafs, play for Vancouver, or play at all.
My guess is that he'll go back to the Leafs. I'm sure he wants to have that big skate around the ACC for his last game before he retires, and it would take away from his grand finale if he choose to retire in the middle of the summer, or if he went to another team and retired there...

Hate to be the bearer of bad news Leafs fans but Matsy said August, not August 1st....my prediction...retirement in the summer

I am so over this - just decide already. So fricken dramatic - if its taken this long to decide clearly there isn't a pure desire to play. Why would you spend valuable salary cap space on a guy who is essentially indifferent to playing. Yeah, I know, he's crazy talented, but in the Leafs situation (they're still trying to rebuild right?!) the best thing that could happen is Sundin not returning. It's time to stop relying on Captain Mats to carry the entire team on his shoulders. Let the younger guys take charge and find their own way. Just my opinion though.

Aaaah... so it's just "August" in general. I was told August 1st by TSN Sportsdesk when the story originally came out about this deadline and didn't hear anything about it since, so I always had Aug.1 in my head.
I love it though, he's continuing to SCREW the team even more! They can't really plan for a team this year until they know whether or not they're going to use multi-millions of cap space for his contract.
The Leafs should just plan for this year's salary with him off it. If he decides to come back from whatever they can squeeze him in for under the cap, fine.
He had said that he wouldn't decide BEFORE Aug. 1.
I heard on the radio this morning that every year, he always gets some Swedish players together for a week or two, to skate before players head to training camp. He hasn't invited anyone this year. I'm thinking he's leaning heavily towards retirement. The longer he takes to decide, the more likely he'll be to hang 'em up

Right now, to be honest, I couldn't care less. If Sundin comes back to Toronto, thats great BUT have any of you sat down and looked at our roster? It's pratically the same as last year, just different players. So that means he still has nothing to work with.
If he doesn't come back, then thats fine too. Our team is going to do much better/worse with or without him.
But whatever he chooses I wish him the best of luck with it.

I would prefer it if he doesn't come back (accept offer elsewhere, or retire). Not because I don't like him, I do. But if the management wants to be serious about changing the face of the team, they have to start at the top of the roster. If we're truely to believe they're going to put a new team in front of us, the face of the Leafs has to go.
Not to mention that he's a lot of cap space that could be used on prospective talent.
