Keeping out of the penalty box seems to agree with the Niagara IceDogs.

Drawing just three penalties, including one offsetting infraction, the IceDogs downed the Peterborough Petes 6-2 in Peterborough Saturday night.

"It was a really good game. We played a disciplined game," said head coach Mario Cicchillo.

"It was a really good weekend. The guys worked really hard. It's tough to play three (home) and three (away games). We take our hats off to these young men who played three and three and then had a workout (Sunday) at White Oaks."

It was also an offensive game for Niagara, with Mathew Sisca scoring a hat trick. John Cullen picked up the win between the pipes for the IceDogs, kicking aside 31 saves.

"It was good to see some of the ot her guys who have been held off the score sheet get back on," Cicchillo said. "Matt Piva has got back on track and Marco (Insam) got another."

Peterborough got on the scoreboard first, at about five minutes into the opening frame, but Sisca got his first of the night about 10 minutes later for Niagara to tie the game 1-1.

The IceDogs went on a tear in the second period, with goals from Piva, Insam and Sisca to take a 4-1 lead. However, the Petes converted on a power play and the period ended 4-2 in favour of the IceDogs. Niagara went just 1-7 with the extra man.

In the third, Reggie Traccitto regained the IceDogs' three-goal lead about four minutes in, while Sisca got his hat trick on the power play about four minutes later.

Sisca also got an assist in Saturday's game, while captain Alex Pietrangelo set up three goals.

Cicchillo said Pietrangelo's return from the St. Louis Blues has given the IceDogs a lift.

"We were prepared to go without him all year, but once a guy like that comes back and you don't lose anyone else, it's a big boost for you," he said. "He's a good leader on and off the ice. If you talk to anyone on the club, they'll tell you the same thing. It's great to get him back, and with his experience he can teach all of us. What he learned in three months in the NHL will be good for all of us."

The IceDogs' record sits at 8-8- 4-4 for 24 points and second place in the Central Division. In the last 10 games, however, Niagara has gone 5-1-3-1.

"We've gotten better every game. We lost eight games in shootouts or overtime, but I felt we competed in every single game. I see the guys getting better and, as a coach and an organization, that's our job -- as long as we're making them better, and better people, in the long run."
