As winter slowly approaches, once again, Niagara Falls is left out of in the cold without an OHL hockey team.

Fortunately for us local hockey fans - and only a few kilometers up the road - the City of St. Catharines is gearing up for their inaugural home opener at the Jack Gatecliff Arena this Friday.

As a proud season ticket holder, I am pleased to say that the Niagara IceDogs drew more than 2,000 fans at only their third home exhibition game which took place last week, and the residents of St. Catharines (and Niagara) seem to be responding very well to the team's early successes, as the 'Dogs defeated last year's memorial cup champions, the Plymouth Whaters, 10-1.

Can someone explain to me why the City of Niagara Falls didn't jump on the chance to bring this level of high-caliber hockey and positive economic impact back to our great city? If St. Catharines can turn around what looks to be the beginnings of a successful season in just a few weeks, I am confused as to how a city home to two major casinos was not able to accommodate the IceDogs request(s)?

Regardless, I encourage our citizens to travel up the road to St. Kitts and take-in some great junior A hockey and cheer on our local (close enough) team!

Way to go Niagara Falls Council! Go IceDogs!

No one has any money left to go to the game after going into the casinos. Either that or Niagara falls wants people to gamble more then they want them to enjoy hockey. Regardless, I'm happy they are here in St. Catharines.

i agree better here than there... falls gets more cash flow from tourists than they would a hockey team... unfortunate but realistic.

"as the 'Dogs defeated last year's memorial cup champions, the Plymouth Whaters, 10-1."

Not to nitpick but I think Vancouver would be offended by this statement.

Well, as you can see, most niagara region journalists are great researchers. Please note that I said "MOST" and not "all".

Well, it looks to me as if it was a "letter to the editor" and not an article, if that changes anyone's opinion of it...
