Apparently Cogeco's "unlimited" internet access is NOT unlimited. My internet access was shut down by Cogeco today due to over-usage - there was recently had a hard drive crash here at home so I had to pull ALL my web site files from all sites back to my home computer (over 90GB of data). This put me over their 60GB limit. So now I'm only allowed 1GB of usage for the rest of the month, or they will shut down access again (time for Sympatico eh!? Sympatico specifically told me about a year ago that they do NOT apply usage limits to the internet access). So for the next couple days media updates (photos, videos) will be at a minimum. Sorry about all this - you can imagine how frustrating it is. To top my day off, someone rear-ended me at an intersection this afternoon (nobody was hurt thankfully). The good news of the day? The Canadian dollar is now worth more than the American dollar.

Ok, I just got a BIT of breathing room - I'm not on the "High Speed Internet Professional" package @ $64.95 per month, but instead of 60GB/month usage I get 100GB, and a speed boost from 10Mbps to 16Mbps which will come in handy when backing up the web server, and I believe the upstream will go from about 640kbps to 1Mbps.

It's amazing how bandwidth adds up when it's not in the front of your thoughts and you think it's unlimited.

I was told Sympatico *IS* unlimited, although I don't think they can provide the speeds I need (I think about 5mbps is about as fast as they go)

I got the same suspension on thursday for bandwidth abuse too. Usenet is a serious addiction, if you thought torrents were good, you have some learning to do :P.

I inquired about the sympatico packages as well, and for what they offer in this area, i consider it piss poor. 5mbit speeds with bandwidth caps at 60gb, the only difference is they don't suspend you if you go over that cap, they just tack on a little suprise to your bill, at $1 per gig over, its a rude wakeup to be compared to the time i woke up next to the fat girl i met at the dain city tavern.

I'm sticking with the standard tv/net/voip standard package I have now, and keep an eye on my upload, that could be an issue as well due to the fact upload traffic costs them money, while downloads are unlimited (for them).

WOW... a buck a gig, that's a lot. Not outrageous though. Some web hosts charge as much as $10/gig over the limit.

Upload/download limits are combined - you can upload 99gigs if you only down 1. They don't pay more either way. They just lease lines with the backbone providers so it doesn't matter which way the traffic flows. The switches on the network don't have any more load transmitting data than receiving.

I switched my package, so right now I'm on 16mbps (1mbit up). So now I can send files to the web server at about 116kb/sec instead of 75kb/sec, and I can download close to 2MB/sec instead of around 1.4MB/sec where it maxed out before.

Wow we've come a long days from my old 300 baud pocket modem on my Commodore 64. I used to think that 1KB/sec was fast on my 1200 baud modem.
