ST. CATHARINES—Defenceman Alex Pietrangelo of the Niagara IceDogs is among 40 players who have been invited by Hockey Canada to tryout for the Canadian men’s Under-18 summer squad.
The six-foot-three-200-pound rearguard, currently ranked third by International Scouting Services for the 2008 National Hockey League entry draft, will be battling for one of 22 spots on the Under-18 team when the selection camp opens Aug. 4 in Calgary.
The 17-year-old Pietrangelo scored seven goals and added 45 assists in 59 games during his rookie season with the Mississauga IceDogs. He also had a plus-40 rating, tops on the team and third over-all in the Ontario Hockey League.
Pietrangelo also was captain of Team Ontario that won the gold medal at the Canada Winter Games in February in Whitehorse, Yukon.
The Canadian Under-18 team will compete Aug. 14-18 at the Memorial of Ivan Hlinka world championship (formerly the Junior World Cup) in the Czech Republic and Slovakia.
Canada has won the tournament in each of the last three years.
