ST. CATHARINES—The Niagara IceDogs will officially kickoff their arrival in the Niagara Region Tuesday morning, July 10, with a brunch co-hosted by the Ontario Hockey League team and the Mayor of St. Catharines, Worship Bryan McMullan.
Political and business leaders from the Niagara area, as well as team owner Bill Burke, will meet at the Quality Hotel Parkway Convention Centre from 10 a.m. until noon to hear about plans the team has for the coming season.
“These are exciting times,” says Mr. Burke. “These young men play the game with a lot of passion and dedication and that’s what the IceDogs will bring to the Niagara Region.”
In addition to business and political leaders, several players will attend the brunch, which will be held in the Merlot Ballroom of the Quality Hotel Parkway and Convention Centre, 327 Ontario Street in St. Catharines.
Several of the players who will be at the function were part of last year’s record-setting season the franchise enjoyed as the Mississauga IceDogs. The Mississauga franchise was sold to Mr. Burke in June and the relocation of the franchise to the Niagara area was approved on June 5 by the Board of Governors of the OHL.
When the IceDogs open the season Sept. 21 against the Mississauga St. Michael’s Majors at the Jack Gatecliff Arena, it will mark the return of Major Junior Hockey to the area for the first time in 11 years.
