I'd give him an offer - take a pay cut or we'll just sit you out until someone either picks you up or your contract runs out :)

McCabe is a GOOD defenceman - I'm not saying he's bad. It's just that he's not $5-7M good. And that cash could go into other positions on the team that need beefing up.

As for scoring the winning goal for Buffalo, that doesn't mean anything to me. You can't practice to NOT make mistakes. The best of 'em make mistakes like that just as much as the worst of 'em. It was a fluke, and reflects nothing on his skill level. He's just hurting the team by taking up all that cap money. I still WANT him on the team, he's better than your average defenceman in the league, just not at his price tag.

Wow, 1 beer the cost of a 12 pack almost. Although maybe the high price is just there to cut down on alcohol consumption.

Yah... since Ferguson game in and Quinn left, the team has completely lost a "face". I just have no connection with most of the guys who are now on the team. Aside from Tucker there's no heart. You can't take out personality guys like Domi, Belfour, Roberts, etc.. and replace them with blank faces. Sure the older guys need to move on in exchange for younger players, but this team just doesn't have an identity anymore. At least that's how I feel. And it's becoming hard to cheer for guys that bluntly put, I just con't care about!

Maybe there just hasn't been enough controversy going on and huge brawls with other teams to build that character yet. I dunno.

I completely agree with Tucker. The attention McCabe is getting for this is just awful. It was a bad mistake. Why hasn't anyone mentioned Sundin was a -4 that game? The entire team needs to be playing better. McCabe does not deserve half the stuff he gets. I agree he is overpaid but thats something we are just going to have to live with. He is still a top dman and I would not like to see Toronto without him.

Everyone makes mistakes, I agree cut the guy some slack. It's not just him thats playing bad, its almost everyone on the team. But I do agree with AlphaDog that he does definatly not live up to his pay, even thought he is a good defencemen.

Actually we shouldn't even blame McCabe for making that cash. How can we blame him? If *I* were a dman on the Leafs, and my agent said he could get me $5M a year and that Ferguson would pay it, there's no way I'd be like "aaah, that's way too much for me man, I'm not worth it". I'd be like.. "Hell yah!" We should be mad at Ferguson for how much McCabe makes, not being mad at McCabe for not being a $5M player just because Ferguson pays him that much. Giving a guy 5 million a year doesn't magically turn him into a player that's worth that much.]

And although we should be angry at Ferguson for McCabe's salary, we can't be TOO hard because there were circumstances to it - Bryan was coming off a -stellar- offensive year and if Ferg didn't offer that, he could very well have lost McCabe to other teams that were offering in that area. THEN, he'd have to heard "how the hell did you let McCabe go when he had an amazing season this season!?" from all the fans.

You don't pay him what his agent says he's worth, you loose him and have fans yelling at you all year for not being able to keep him.

You pay the guy what his agent says he's worth because of the season he just had, he doesn't repeat the same numbers, and you hear it from the fans for overpaying him.

I do NOT envy the GMs job in any sport :P
