There is a story going around that Avery made a comment to Blake about having cancer... Apparently Howard Berger of the Fan is reporting it but no one is confirming or denying it.. If he said something like that then I will have lost all respect for him...

I wouldn't belive that for a SECOND. I've seen Avery off-ice in interviews, and fund raiser stuff, etc... and he's not the type of guy that would do something that worthless. I don't know any NHLer that is.

And Howard Berger better post proof of this or he's just lost any reputation he had - you won't be able to believe ANYTHING this guy says if he can't back up his rumour.

Well this thing is all over the news. http://www.fan590.com it's all over Sportsnet, it was on CFTO news, etc.

Like I said on my comments at the top of http://www.baystreetbullies.com Berger must have known ahead of time that he's going to have to prove himself, and the only way to do that is to give his source.

Falsifying a statement like that is almost (if not just) as heartless as saying what he's alledging Avery said.

Whatever the outcome, SOMEBODY is going to be stoned to death in the media.

.. and as much as I hate Avery, as guilty as he is of other crap in the past, he seems to be innocent in this matter. Hence the reason for bringing in his lawyer. The only reason I could see him bringing in his lawyer is to bring slander charges up against Berger. If he DID say it, he wouldn't need a lawyer, because as inhuman as those comments would have been, it wouldn't be illegal to say.

I'll admit I'm jumping to conclusions, but I think Berger's dug his grave on this one.

just watching sportsnet...the leafs game... and that is what they were talking about during the intermisson... avery is saying that he did not say anything... yad yad yad... they were saying that the info came from the rangers... but after an investigation they could not prove anything... i guess tucker got find $1000, the leafs $10 000 and the rangers $25 000... for the stuff during warm ups... we'll see what happens with this one.

Yah, this is something that's really hyped up, and for good cause. It's the kind of thing that could end Avery's career if it's proved he said that. If Howard Berger can't prove he said it, and it turns out that Berger made the whole thing up, it'll be his career that's gone. ONE of the two is really at risk of having their career come to a disgraceful end. I can't see it ending by just fading away.

Obviously Avery's doing the right thing by getting the law involved, because anyone who DIDN'T make those remarks would be VERY pissed off and want legal retribution. If he didn't go after Berger the way he is it would be showing guilt that he DID say what Berger's claiming, because anyone wrongfully accused of such a serious statement would be furious. Oh well, I'll let some hours pass by on this one and see how things turn out.

Of course, the person I feel sorry for the most in all this isn't Berger or Avery - it's Blake. THe poor guy has enough to worry about. Now he's got this circus going on around him, and he had nothing to do with it.

Yeah I definatly agree. The guy has been through so much lately, and is probably just wanting to take his mind of the whole situation. Then something like this pops up. He doesn't deserve it!

Maybe that's why the Leafs have lost for 40 years... it's the media's fault for putting so much mental strain on the guys!! :cool: It's too stressful of a market to win in!

You know as much of an ass as Avery is and I hate him just as much if not more then the next guy. He does his job, and he does it better then anybody. I would love for the Leafs to get him.
