Niagara Welcomes CPJHL Team. NOTL Nationals

CPJHL, a feeder for NCAA and other type college/university programs they say. It looks like this league formed in 2016 and has had its share of struggles. I'll be checking it out though!

For Immediate Release May 3, 2018

Niagara-on-the-Lake- Town Council and staff are excited to welcome a new Junior A
hockey team to Niagara-on-the-Lake. The Niagara-on-the-Lake Nationals will play home
games at the Meridian Credit Union (MCU) arena on Friday nights and the occasional
Sundays beginning September, 2018.

“Town staff worked hard to facilitate this new tenant in the MCU Arena and to bring Junior
hockey to NOTL,” says Kevin Turcotte, Manager of Parks and Recreation. “This is a
positive opportunity for the community to enjoy Canada's national pastime.”
The Town and the NOTL Nationals have signed a three year agreement, with the
possibility for extension. Dressing rooms at the MCU arena are under construction for the
upcoming season.

“I am enthusiastic about another opportunity that brings youth to the Town,” says Lord
Mayor Darte. “I know my family will be establishing a new tradition of being at the arena
on Friday nights to cheer on the NOTL Nationals, and I can’t wait to see you and your
family there as well!”

The players will be between ages 16 and 20 and the team is playing in the Canadian
Premier Junior Hockey Leauge (CPJHL) which is sanctioned by the United Hockey
Union. Try-outs begin at the end of this month.
Owner and coach, Spencer De Wolfe states “We are thrilled to be joining the Niagara-onthe-Lake
community and bringing junior hockey to the town. We are looking forward to
joining events and getting involved within the community.”
Anyone interested in being involved with the team can contact De Wolfe directly. The
official website for the team is www.notlnationals.com.

There's a twitter account devoted to "CPJHL Problems". A very interesting read; if even half of the stories are true, it's going to be rough ride for any players that jump into this.

Looking at the distribution of the other teams, the lack of sponsorship, and NOTL not necessarily being a hotbed of hockey activity... I will be surprised to see this survive a year. The Virgil arena is a nice spot for minor hockey tournaments and local recreational leagues but I don't see a large contingent of fans forking out $8 a game.

I hope Niagara on the Lake didn't get suckered into major improvements for this?

Updated dressing room is all I have heard so far. I have a concept for them though. All you have to do is add "in the vineyard" after any event, and people will show up.

"Yoga with goats in the vineyard" - People showed up
"Bad movie night with mosquitos in the vineyard" people showed up
"Hockey night in the vineyard" people will show up!!

Reading that twitter feed: $10,000 per player per season works out to be $208 per game (48 games a season). Good grief, are there really parents out there who would pay that?
