Youíre not gonna like this..

Iíve been watching hockey since before the Empire struck back. And in that time, Iíve seen quite a few changes. I remember quite clearly when the NHL introduced overtime in the regular season. Thatís probably the biggest and most significant change that hockey has seen in my lifetime. Overtime in the regular season debuted in the 1985-86 season. Itís funny; I donít recall a whole lot of people demanding a resolution to the 10-15 ties that a team would typically end up with at the end of a season. But it was decided that a 5-minute OT period would be added.
But what eventually happened was, once a game was tied, coaches would just have their team sit back, kill the clock in the 5-minute OT, and take the point for the tie. So the NHL devised a Ďshootoutí to decide games that were tied after OT. The shootout has been around a while now, and Iíve given it more than a chance. Iíve never liked the shootout to decide games. Never, from the first time I saw it in 1998. Not just that itís gimmicky, but itís an unsatisfying way to decide games. I just flat-out do not like it.
What I find interesting is that this season, Iíve noticed quite a few analysts both in the NHL and OHL mention that they love the 3-on-3 OT. I didnít think I would like it when I first saw it, but I love it! And if thereís a penalty in OT, they add one player to the fouled team. If thereís another penalty, add another, thereís your 5-on-3.
I think itís time. Given the size of the players and speed of the game, itís time to go to full-time 4-on-4. What I donít know is how well junior players would be able to do it, all season. Thatís a lot of ice to cover for a 17-year old.
But what do you think?

Totally ridiculous. ...I can't believe I was baited into responding to this...lol

I'd rather watch a shoot-out than a game end up in a tie. I hate ties. In sports there is a winner and a loser. I hate participation ribbons too. Tie ares basically participation ribbons. Play the game until there is a winner. I don't care if it's 3 on 3, 4 on 4, 5 on 5. Just finish the game.

"You play to win the game" You don't "play to tie the game".

Full time 4 on 4 would be the end of me being a die hard hockey fan

I actually can’t stand 3 on 3 OT... it would be better if they had a ‘change of possession’ or ‘shot clock’ ... I hate when the team has the puck and if they can’t create an odd man situation then they circle back.

Awful ... if it was so good they would use it in the playoffs ... which obviously they do not ... the best hockey is 5 on 5 OT playoff hockey ... bar none.

For me, you were 100% correct on the title for this topic.

Although I donít want/like ties I could live with it if it meant no more shootouts Iíd go 10 minutes of 3 on 3 and if itís still tied after that then oh well

Nope. No ties. Play until there is a winner.

I too hate the shootout ... and it has nothing to do with my flyers being the worst team in the history of the NHL in the shootout ...

Put the shootout at the beginning of the game and then play the game ... guarantee that the third period and OT would be different when one team KNOWS that if it’s tied at the end of OT they only get one point. Do sudden death shoot out too .... if after one round it’s 1-0 too bad so sad you lost the shootout ... on with the game ...

Shootout in every game will appeal to the Americans and those who love this gimmick ...
