Worst case scenario in a season gone wrong for the Niagara Icedogs......What if Alex Pietrangelo is not sent back to Junior by the St. Louis Blues? Could happen, as his play at the World Juniors was, for the most part, outstanding, being named the tournament's best defenseman. Plus, there has been a coaching change in St. Louis. How would that affect his playing time? Will the Blues accelerate their rebuild mode before the trade deadline? If so, they keep him. If they do, obviously, the Icedogs get nothing for him in a trade, instead of the expected pile of picks and prospects.Keep your fingers crossed he is sent back to the OHL, a big part of the Icedogs future depends on it.

The likelihood is he comes back to the OHL(not Niagara). The Blues will be in tough to make the playoffs,so they will be reluctant to lose a year of pro eligibility on Alec's contract. Do not get too excited however...the Blues do NOT want him here in Niagara and will have an influence on his future.

Pietrangelo back with IceDogs, but for how long?
Posted By STANDARD STAFF Posted 2 hours ago The St. Louis Blues have assigned defenceman Alex Pietrangelo back to the Niagara IceDogs, but don't expect to see him in Niagara's lineup tonight in St. Catharines against the Plymouth Whalers "I don't think so. He's in St. Louis right now and he has some meetings later this (Wednesday) afternoon. He definitely won't be in the lineup the next couple of nights," IceDogs general manager Dave Brown said. Brown wasn't tipping his hand on the future of Pietrangelo, with the OHL trading deadline arriving at noon Monday. "At this point, I don't have any comment. We're working to iron everything out and we have a lot on our plate right now." Pietrangelo is coming off his second straight appearance for Canada at the world junior championship. After winning gold last year, Pietrangelo and his Canadian teammates earned silver after a 6-5 overtime loss to the United States Tuesday. Pietrangelo led all defence-men in tournament scoring with three goals and nine assists. He was named the event's top defenceman. Prior to the junior worlds, Pietrangelo had played nine games with the St. Louis Blues, scoring a goal and an assist. If the King City native had played one more NHL game for St. Louis this season, the 2009- 10 year would have counted towards his years of service before he arrived at NHL free agency. The only other option the Blues had was to send him to the American Hockey League for a two-week conditioning stint. Pietrangelo last played for Niagara this spring when the IceDogs were ousted in the second round of the playoffs by Belleville. |
