Game Thread Hamilton Bulldogs @ Niagara IceDogs - Thursday, 2019.01.17 - 7pm

Niagara IceDogs:
2nd in the East after 41 games with 55 points, 24-9-7-0 or 0.671%
Scoring: Jones 23-40, Robertson 31-31, Maksimov 28-29
Goaltending: Dhillon 34GP 3.14GAA(10th) 0.905%(8th)

Hamilton Bulldogs:
7th in the East after 43 games with 44 points, 20-19-3-1 or 0.512%
Scoring: Kaliyev 33-33, Strome 19-31, Landry 3-30
Goaltending: Roy 24GP 3.25AA(11th) 0.900%(11th)

With four games to Niagara’s credit, the K9 Challenge Cup is a forgone conclusion. The IceDogs need to show some chemistry however, or that may be the only cup they are awarded this season. Ottawa is still ahead with both Oshawa and Sudbury are hoping to close the gap as well.

Gap to First Place: 9 points (2 games in hand)

GAME 42 / 68 vs HAMILTON

A golden opportunity lost on Sunday, but the IceDogs still need a rabbit to chase – weather it can be caught or not (believe it or not sometimes they actually do get caught).

Rabbit = Ottawa

Over a third of season remaining, the Dogs can use this as motivation each night – whether successful or not in the end! The difficulty of this chase - creates 27 must win (playoff like) games to keep the Dogs hungry for a rabbit.

1 Ottawa 43 GP - 64 PTS
2 Niagara 41 GP - 55 PTS
<> Ice Dogs are 9 points behind the 67s but have 2 games in hand. 1 of them this Thursday against Hamilton.

I am still optimistic that our team will catch the 67's before the end of the regular season.

Burke said he plans to shift things around up front in an attempt to find some chemistry. “We’re going to change the lines from how they were on the weekend and build in pairs and go three lines (deep) instead of going with two big lines,” he said. “We’re going to split it up and go with three little bit more balanced lines.

If the plan is to build pairs, here is my guess at the lines tonight:

Jonesy Line: Phillips – Jones – Maksimov
* Jones and Maksimov have great chemistry

Stud Line: Robertson – Studnicka – Sopa
* Studnicka an elite playmaker - Robertson and elite goalscorer

Tommy Boy Line: Castleman - Thomas - Tomasino
* Thomas and Tomasino had good chemistry when they were playing together.

JUD Line: Johnson – Uberti - DeSimone
* Need a defensively reliable player with the 2 kids.

I am not overly concerned about the lines, I am more concerned about them showing up and playing 60 minute games from here on in.
But, that is just me again.

You know, for your 4th line... I might use Howard instead of DeSimone... That way you can rotate Uberti, DeSimone, and Howard... Johnson (for now) is a better choice at Center. He's got more experience, he's stronger, etc...

Like this idea as well. I think what people forget, and this happens in the NHL as well, the higher draft picks get preferential treatment because those players have to play to justify management and scouts choice to draft them. In some cases, like Mitchell Theoret years ago (8th or 9th round pick) they just come out of nowhere and make the team. In the case of Howard he'll have to show he's head and shoulders above the Uberti and DeSimone. Don't get me wrong Uberti and DeSimone are good players, but Howard brings that physicality that both of the true rookies lack. On the other hand Uberti and DeSimone clearly have more speed and skill than Howard.

Well you can't debate that... The some of the things I'd like to see Howard improve this summer, include : some more speed / agility on his skates, improved decision-making (he's still rushing when pressured, would like to see a bit more poise). His angles of pursuit, patience, and positioning are as good as you can expect from a 17 yr old.

Whatever they did with him in Thorold last season, is something I'd like to see more of. His skating improved last season by leaps and bounds. But he's got a lot of room to grow still. I really think he could be a good defensive OHL Defenseman. And for our purposes, he'd make a pretty good 'gritty 4th line LW.'
