Players drafted in the first 3 rounds are what most teams use to win. We have no players from the first 3 rounds from the 2018 draft and only 2 players from this years draft. Looking forward we are missing our 2nd, 3rd and 4th round picks next draft and our 1st and 2nd round picks the draft after that. In total we are missing one 1st round pick, 6 second round picks and 4 third round picks over the next 6 years. The team is in horrible shape for the future.

The only way to fix this is to trade what we can to recoup draft picks and acquire young high end players. If the Icedogs keep their older players to make the playoffs, we will end up at the bottom of the standings for the next 5 years.
The other part of this. Junior hockey is a business. Playoff games are extra revenue and I would not be surprised to learn they don't actually turn a profit until the playoffs.

So that would add pressure to continue the playoff streak, or return to the playoffs after missing them this upcoming season.

Tomasino might be our marque player and we will need him.

If we suck for two years and its obvious we are going to miss the playoffs. Sure, trade him.

D-MAN PROFILE #4: HOWARD MASON
Mason Howard has completed two successful season of junior hockey (Jr B /Jr A). It's unlikely that Howard will develop into a future star, but he has proven himself to be an effective and valuable skilled OHL defenseman, who will only get better over the next couple of seasons.

Top 50 OHL Players - 2019 NHL Entry Draft: 20 Honorable Mentions
“While all of these HM players most definitely have potential, they need to put in a lot of work, to be serious NHL prospects” –Brock Otten

Mason Howard - Niagara IceDogs (Honorable Mention)
As an OHL rookie, Howard has looked good for the Dogs at both ends of the ice. Plays the game hard, but also has some nice puck skill. If Howard can find a way to improve his skating, he could end up being a very good defender in the OHL. He has a lot going for him. There's the size. Howard is a huge defender at 6.03, 220lbs. He loves to use it - and demonstrated a willingness to step for a teammate when needed. (Howard vs Bignell)

Howard is particularly physical in the neutral zone and near the blueline, as he is aggressive in denying zone entry.
(2018 Training Camp)

Howard has better puck skill than his 3 points on the year would suggest. Has some quick hands and could even one day play on the point of a powerplay IMO. (1st OHL goal 1:26-1:35)

However, all of this will be tied to whether he can become quicker and more fleet of foot (or skate).

-Brock Otten (ohlprospects)

A LOOK BACK

OHL Cup Preview: (March 2017)
#10 Mason Howard, LD – Strong sturdy defender who’s lifted fans out of their seats with bone-crushing body checks. While his skating remains his biggest weakness, his puck management and transitioning ability score well above average so he’s considered a legitimate Top 100 prospect come the OHL Draft.

Source: thescout.ca (April 2017)
Mason Howard is one of the top defensive prospects out of the Alliance. A blend of a throwback-style defending and modern day puck-moving. He's a smart distributor, yet also offers a feared physical element. One of the best checking defenders in his age group - punishes the puck-carrier with a heavy and clean open ice hit. He wins a majority of his battles.

Mason building his future - Bill Potrecz (December 14, 2017)
http://www.bpsportsniagara.com/mason-building-future/
“He’s been one of our top D right from the get go,” Blackhawks coach Barnes said, “and he played a big role. Early on, he was really logging a lot of minutes — probably too much for a young guy — but it probably helped him adapt to the league a lot quicker.”

Howard joins IceDogs By Bill Potrecz (March 13, 2018)
http://www.bpsportsniagara.com/howard-joins-icedogs/
The only issue with Howard is his foot speed, something he worked on tirelessly this season and will continue to do so this summer. He’s made great improvements this year with his feet coming off his minor midget year,” Burke said. “We’ll make sure he’s working hard on that this summer. Once those feet come along, the sky is really the limit.” Barnes sees Howard as more than just a stay-at-home defenceman. “He’s a solid defensive defenceman but also has very good offensive instincts, so I think he can be a very good two-way player. He’s got the ability to get the pucks on net and make plays.

Speaking of re-build, it's not only the players but, the staff as well. Sometime ago, Joey stated that he would like to have the Assistant Coach position filled by the middle of July. It is the middle of July and no word yet.

Might it be that they intend to promote Maletta for the assistant coach jot?
No mention of a replacement for the head trainer yet as well.

Id be surprised if Maletta goes behind the bench after one season in the organization

I get the impression Maletta is seen as a rising star in the organization. But I also don’t know how Coach Billy or GM Joey feels about Maletta. Is Maletta being groomed? I wish I knew. I think this upcoming year is going to be very much a blank slate. Some returning vets, but I’m not expecting any kind of championship run in 2020.

OA DEFENCEMAN PROFILE #5-6-7: PAQUETTE, HUNTER and ROBERTS

Collectively, the IceDogs return the 3 best OA defenseman in the OHL, what they decide to do with these three we may not find out for some time.

The three bring a lot of experience, a reliable skill set and a solid defensive game to the IceDogs. In 2019, Jacob Paquette was voted the top defensive defencemen in the OHL coaches poll and returns for his 5th OHL season (288 total games 47 of them playoff games) before he earns an 2020 ELC. Elijah Roberts has played a total of 280 OHL games (31 PO games)- and being arguably the best skating OA defenseman, makes him a valuable asset to the IceDogs or a contending team. Drew Hunter, injured before Toronto Maple Leaf rookie camp, rebounded with his best all-round OHL season. He returns to add to his total of 176 OHL games and perhaps follow in Ryan Mantha footsteps to earn an ELC in 2020.

With NHL signed (99) OA D-Men like E.Bouchard, M.Phillips, D.Samoukov, F.Gordeev, J.Keene, moving on it only leaves a few notable 99 D-men returning to just 11 OHL teams A.DeMeo (Sudbury), N.Grima (Sarnia), R.Webb (Saginaw), H.Davis/L. Ham (Missy), C.Fraser (Petes), B.Lyle (OS), N.Hoffenmayer (Ott), N.King (NB), J.Brahaey (KGN), Kade Landry (Ham) and J.Golden (Erie).

In regards to OA defenseman, the IceDogs are in a position of strength heading into the 2019-2020 season in terms of their own core defense, mentorship and tradeable assets.

Everything is relative and when you look at the defensive rosters of the other eastern teams, an IceDogs D core of Paquette, Hunter, Roberts, Howard, Enright, Cato and Chanton is better than several, comparable to some and only less than a few teams.

Although hinting at a 2D 1F OA configuration, JB was non-committal suggesting a wait and see approach, despite interest in some of their OAs.

Everyone has an opinion, but without question if I were GM, Id keep 3 OA D (Paquette, Hunter and Roberts) to ensure that this young team (and young goalies) have an experience back-end to remain competitive, provide stability and serve as mentors to the 3 highly touted rookies (Enright, Cato and Chanton).

Focus on building and developing the back first! The combination of Castleman, Phillip and Johnson, should at the very least return a 2nd, 3rd and 4th. This would be a decent start to replenishing the draft picks.

At the trade deadline, Im moving Paquette and Thomas and allowing the remaining six defenseman all the ice time they need to further develop their games!

I love this idea.

Is anyone else of the opinion that Roberts really improved as the last season progressed?
