That is exactly the REASON to trade Tomasino. This year and next will not be productive years for the team in terms of standings. The picks we could obtain for him will be.

Rarely does an OHL star player, expected to return the following season, ever get traded a year early. There are countless examples of players being traded in their final season – and teams receiving great returns on those players.

Trading a player a year early, does not really amount to much more. You’re not getting an extra 03 star – perhaps a couple of extra picks, but that is hardly worth the trade-off for a fan base or the organization as whole.

The value in trading a player a year early, is offset by putting a player on the trade market the following year when he is more physically developed, skill level refined and can have a greater impact on the potential success of the team acquiring him.

In the case of Tomasino, in 18 months, as opposed to 6 months, he will be bigger, faster, more skilled, more dominate, more valuable – and most likely in the midst of a season where he could very well be amoung the league’s top 3 scorers, representing Canada at the WJC – and since it’s an OHL Mem-Cup year, Tomasino will be the most sought after player in entire league. If the IceDogs trade Tomasino this year, so be it, but it makes zero sense to me.

I don’t buy that argument at all. We traded Chris Paquette when he was 18 and got a ton of picks. If we trade Tomasino this season, we will get picks and young high end players. We need those high end young players desperately because we don’t have many, especially at the forward position. Holding on to Tomasino this season will only slow our rebuild. This of course is contingent on finding a team with enough assets to give us.

Although hinting at a 2D – 1F OA configuration, JB was non-committal suggesting a wait and see approach, despite interest in some of their OAs.

Everyone has an opinion, but without question if I were GM, I’d keep 3 OA D (Paquette, Hunter and Roberts) to ensure that this young team (and young goalies) have an experience back-end to remain competitive, provide stability and serve as mentors to the 3 highly touted rookies (Enright, Cato and Chanton).

Focus on building and developing the back first! The combination of Castleman, Phillip and Johnson, should at the very least return a 2nd, 3rd and 4th. This would be a decent start to replenishing the draft picks.

At the trade deadline, I’m moving Paquette and Thomas – and allowing the remaining six defenseman all the ice time they need to further develop their games!

That will hurt at us the forward position. We are already very thin with only 6 returning forwards and 3 of those returning forwards combined for a total of 9 goals.

If you are using the Chris Paquette trade as a reason to trade Tomasino a year early, that is not a good example. IceDogs did not receive a package that included 2 players, they didn’t even receive 1 player back (only a collection of picks). Unless a team is willing to offer you picks and 2 players (an 03 drafted in the 1st and 2nd round), IceDogs may as well wait until the following year to get that one 1st round 03 teams are willing to part with.

Provide me one example of a star player traded a year before his final year (OA year excluded) that produced a "more than significant" return – and then I’ll provide 10 examples of players traded in their final year that produced a "significant" return.

I think most on here are forgetting that according to OHLInsider (when he was active) and others Tomasino has already been traded. If that's the case this debate is pointless.

I believe he will be traded sometime this season, hopefully right at the trade deadline so we can build as many points as possible as a team before trading him, Thomas, Paquette, etc.

…and lets not also forget that OHLInsiders‏ is full of

According to him: “…part Two gets done come June 1st. Have heard it's just for a 2nd Round Pick and paperwork is done and just post-dated. Seeing as the trade did not work out for Niagara - I would not be surprised if they pull out…”

There was never any truth to this part two rumour. It was pretty clear he has a bone to pick with the Icedogs and if he was still active - would have used this ridiculous rumour to slam JB for being “shady” and “pulling out” of this deal.
