The fact is that draft picks are traded like hockey cards in this league.
Look at the most recent OHL draft,18 of the 20 second round picks were acquired via trade. the year before it was 16 of 20 second round picks had been traded. I look at the Icedog roster today and I see 5 left wingers on the roster. Another left winger (former #9) was traded for a nice return. i also liked him last year, but his foot speed, or lack of, hurt him IMO. Same with the former #20. Not sure where he would fit in this line-up. Could very well flourish in Oshawa with the ice time he wouldn't get here. The team the last couple years was not good, to be kind. I think that most of these trades make the team better and thats what I like to watch. Maybe the last management team had worn out their welcome around the league and other GM's wouldn't deal with them. I agree that the number of trades since the end of last season is alot, but i think the team is better on paper than if the trades had not been made. Time will tell. |

I am not sure what the point is but, in 2020 London had 7 draft picks acquired via trade, in 2021 7 more and in 2022 4 picks were acquired via trade....and they seem to be the Gold Standard in the league.
They have made lots of picks and then realized that the player doesn't fit their plans for whatever reason and then they move the player. Seems to be working i don't believe standing still would have been the best choice. |

I really need to figure out how multi quotes works, lol
1 - yeah, tons of seconds move, but you also need to consider HOW they move. Most seconds move around during "go for it years". With the cyclical nature of the league that means every team in a 3-4 year span has a go for it year. As such, with the new rules on length of 2nds that can move we see a lot of 2nd rounders with different teams. What this team has done this year is much different - hence the criticisms. 2 - No need to guess here. This is a fact that multiple gms and hockey people will tell you. I liked most of Joeys moves, but there was a lot of stuff floating around about how some gm's did not like the interactions with Niagara. 3 - It is way better on paper. I don't think anyone was arguing that. The argument is, yes its better, but is it championship worthy? And what did you give up to make a 'better' team. Quote:

I am not saying that this is a Memorial Cup team by any means, but I do think that this is a very important season for the franchise.
In the eyes of many it has gone from a model franchise to a laughing stock. From 2 conference championships and hosting OHL-Russia games to making the headlines for the wrong reasons. Its reputation around the league surely is not the same as it once was. No one knows how many fans have decided not to come back because of the off ice incidents. Attendance around the league has been down due to Covid. In the last few years the team also lost their excellant group sales person. Building trust and fan support will be hard to do but can be done. But the best way of putting bums in the seats is winning. People will argue that the team may have overpayed for some, but the players brought in appear to be solid OHL players. The new owner must have known for awhile that he may have been purchasing the team because they seem to have scouted the league quite a bit. Obviously making 17 trades is not in the Youtube video of how to be a GM, but I believe drastic times called for it. |

Great points.
I remember a few months back we were discussing the lack of media and marketing. I pointed out that I would rather have them focus on hockey first. As you said, a winning team will put bums in seats.

If winning is so important to the new owners, then why not hire an experienced GM and coaching staff. And why reduce your scouting team to only 5 scouts, which I believe is the fewest number of scouts employed by any OHL team. IMO, we are not set up to be successful in terms of winning. We are set up to be the lowest budget team in the OHL from a hockey operations perspective.
