Default 2020 IMPORT DRAFT

The Burke family you must be listening.
With the 4th overall pick in this years CHL import draft, it is about time the Burkes open up there wallets.
Everyone knows the import draft is all about getting high end drafted NHL players by spending.
Us fans have been great to the Burkes with our top notch fan support every year.
This year in a rebuild year, we still averaged 4900, thats amazing.
So its time the Burkes cough up some dough we provided and draft a high end impact player.
Clubs with way less average attendance have, for example, Hamilton, Ottawa, Kingston, to name a few.
I really like the Sopa's and Chanton but these guys will probably not make the NHL.
We want and deserve players the calibre of Rossi , Kolyachonok, Okhotyuk, Oksentyuk, Chromiak, Mysak, Luukkonen, Prosvtov

CHL IMPORT DRAFT PROSPECTS

Proven year after year, and especially this past season, the Niagara IceDogs' fan base is the best in the OHL. This team will never lack for community support (TV, Radio, local businesses, merchandise, etc...) and paying customers (STH and casual fans). IceDogs select in a desirable spot (#4) and all they need to do is agree to the financial demands of the player's agent. Other teams, with far less fan and financial support have done it successfully. It’s the IceDogs’ turn to bring in an 03 (or 02) that is an NHL calibre talent.

================================================== ==================================================

For the 2020 Import Draft, the IceDogs have a few paths they can go down:

1. Draft an 01 or 02 NHL Drafted player that will play here for only a year, but provide a significant offensive boost to a rebuilding team – and then redraft another player the following year.

2. Draft an 02, with a late birthday eligible for the 2021 NHL Draft. Then the player would be drafted to the NHL as an IceDog, so he is under the CHL/NHL pro agreement going forward. The player would be slightly older player than an 03 but will still be here for at least 2 years.

3. Draft an 03 NHL Draft prospect, who will be drafted as an IceDog and be part of the rebuild for 3 years.

4. Draft an 03, with a late birthday eligible for the 2022 NHL Draft. A young player who will be a key part of the rebuild - and drafted into the NHL as an IceDog.

The OHL Import Draft is a challenge for CHL teams - there are so many variables and moving parts. The story by Josh Brown (May 2019) is excellent in helping you understand some of those challenges.

Navigating the CHL import draft requires homework, connections and a little luck
https://www.therecord.com/sports-sto...a-little-luck/
The import draft has always been a challenge for junior hockey clubs, but it is becoming increasingly volatile as options for players increase. But with due diligence, a few key connections and some good fortune, teams can land an impact player who can push their franchise over the top.

The names posted, in the coming days and weeks, are the top tier players that are CHL Import draft “eligible” - that may or may not be “available”. Closer to the CHL Import Draft, the focus will shift to trying to identifying which players on this list are looking to come to North America to improve their chances of playing in the NHL.

It's only a matter of time Iguchi makes the next step in his career, and the video above only further affirms that. He's eligible for the 2020 CHL Import Draft.

Japan native Aito Iguchi selected in 7th round of USHL draft
SPORTSNET Staff (May 6, 2019)

Aito Iguchi, considered by some to be Japan’s best hope yet at producing a bona fide NHL star, has been selected with the 104th overall pick in the USHL draft. Rob Pulford - a longtime NHL scout - told Sportsnet earlier this year. “Obviously, his stickhandling is outstanding, his ability to control the puck. He’s got soft hands, a quick stick, he can really dazzle you with his puck skills. As a skater, really good quickness and agility, great edgework.”

CHL IMPORT DRAFT ELIGIBLE (TOP D/G ONLY)

02 G Jespar Wallstedt 2002-11-14 (6.03 / 205) – Sweden Lulea SuperEllt (TPE 10) // Luleå HF (SHL)

<>2020-2021 Luleå HF SHL. Played 1gm with Pro team in 2019-2020
<> 2021 NHL Entry Draft
<>DOBBLERHOCKEY: In a class with Spencer Knight and Yaroslav Askarov, the young Swedish netminder could end up being the best of the three. Jesper Wallstedt is the youngest goalie to ever play in the SHL. He has high-end athleticism and plays a good technical game. Wallstedt has a good chance of being the third consecutive netminder selected in the top-15.
As a 15 year old, Jesper started 25 games in Sweden’s Lulea HF’s U20 team in the top U-20 league (2.28 GAA and .921 sv%) - as 16 year old last season ( 28GP, 2.53 GAA and .923 sv%), playing guys two years older. He is already dubbed as the next Lundqvist.

03 LD Simon Edvinsson 2003-02-04 (6.04 / 185) Finland Frölunda HC Junior U-20 (SuperElit)

<>2020-2021 Currently No Assign Pro Team. Played 8 games with Frölunda HC J-20 SuperElit
<> 2021 NHL Entry Draft
<>DOBBLERHOCKEY: Simon Edvinsson is a towering blueliner at 6’4″ and he has produced offensively at around a point-per-game clip at every level he’s been at. He has a big shot and solid mobility. Projected 1st round pick in 2021.

03 LD Stanislav Svozil 03-01-17 (6.00 / 172) Czech HC Kometa Brno (Czech Extraliga)
https://www.eliteprospects.com/playe...anislav-svozil
<>2020-2021 Played 41 games for HC Kometa Brno – same top Czech league Jan Mysak was playing for prior to OHL.
<> 2021 NHL Entry Draft
<> DOBBLERHOCKEY: The best defender to come out of the Czech Republic in ages in Stanislav Svozil, the first 2003-born player to play in the Czech Extraliga. He plays a smart game and possesses good enough size to hold his own physically. He rarely looks out of place against men and should show that he not only belongs but that he is an effective and productive player next season when he plays there full-time. He is a good skater who has good instincts at both ends of the ice.

03 LD Artyom Grushnikov 03-03-20 (6.02 / 174) Krasnaya Armiya Moskva (MHL – Russian Jr. Hockey )
https://www.eliteprospects.com/playe...yom-grushnikov
<>2020-2021 Currently No Assign Pro Team
<> 2021 NHL Entry Draft
DOBBLERHOCKEY: Grushnikov is a skilled Russian defenseman who has excelled in international play. There is room to grow in his game but a bit more consistent playing time and some added bulk to his 6’2″ frame should keep him looking like a potential first-rounder.
<> PROJECTED: 2nd / 3rd round NHL Draft

DRAFT ELIGIBLE 2002 / 2001

The other important piece of the 2020 Import Draft is the European players drafted (or undrafted) in the upcoming NHL Draft. Should the IceDogs’ decide to go the 02 (or 01) route, here are the 2020 NHL Central Scouting Ranking European Skaters:
http://www.nhl.com/ice/draftprospect...Rank&year=2020

NOTE: Some of the players listed on the NHL Central Scouting Ranking (NA / European Skaters) are already playing in the CHL (e.g., Martin Chromiak, Jan Mysak ) or were selected in the 2019 CHL Import Draft (e.g.,Tim Stützle, Lucas Raymond):
https://www.eliteprospects.com/draft...ort-draft/2019

There are many more European players available, but these “lists and links” are some of the names floating around on various websites with NHL potential.

CHL IMPORT DRAFT: June 30th

So the question is.. do you draft a player who is more of a sure thing, that we will have to sell off at a high price because he will be in the bigs before we can contend, or do we go for a 16 year old who can be here for a few years.

I'm fine with either option.

I'd like to bring in an impact player here, and see if we can't upgrade one of our overage forwards if it isnt too expensive.

Even if its a guy with a skillset like Phillips, who we didn't get a lot for.

Without the pick next year, we need to do everything we can creatively to be a playoff team, without giving up big assets. I like the d, and our goaltending if Tynan is back. But we need scoring badly.

The issue of course is that the NHL Draft has been postponed – and no date has been set, since the draft order is set by the results of the NHL playoffs. Gary Bettman (Booooo) recently mentioned that if possible, completing the season through the summer is an option.

So the question for IceDogs/CHL fans, how will that affect the Import Draft?

The major issue I see here is the CHL/ NHL agreement. European players are exempted from that rule if they are drafted by an NHL club before joining a CHL team. 2002 European players will be reluctant to sign with any CHL team until after the NHL Draft – so they are not bound to the pro restrictions of that agreement.

As for the IceDogs, they are probably focused on drafting players who are eligible for the 2021 NHL draft anyways – that would be 03s and 02s with late birthdates (e.g., G.Chanton), since you can’t draft an 04 Import.

The absolute best scenario is an 03 with a late birthdate, who wouldn’t be eligible until the 2022 NHL draft – and there is one in particular that is a high-end prospect Brad Lambert – and yes he is an import, Finnish). Only problem – is Lambert too good? Projected to be one of the top players in the 2022 draft.

Without the NHL draft before hand, it will make the CHL Draft, which is already difficult enough, that much more difficult. CHL will have to make some announcement of their plans in the near future.

The NHL draft has apparently moved back to June 26th and 27th and will be virtual.
Assuming that the import draft will be held the next week, being early July.

Found it via google search and it must be a tentative date. Nothing about the draft on it's website though.
Date is always subject to change but, there is no doubt that the draft will not be live and personal this summer.
