Game Thread Niagara IceDogs 2021-22 (Week 02)

The IceDogs got off to a brilliant start last week, with two games and two wins. While the first game had Niagara comfortable over Barrie, Oshawa remained in control for the majority of their match, as Niagara was plagued with sloppy play and the inability to bury pucks in front of open nets. That said, the faithful will take an inglorious win over a well-played loss, any day of the week.

Although tied for first place on points, Niagara suffered in the "goals-for" category and currently sits in the number 5 spot in the Eastern Conference.

This week of course is a dog-fight, as the IceDogs and the Bulldogs square off for a home-and-home contest in two nights. The much coveted K9 Cup hangs in the balance, and there will only be six more games to decide who walks away with it!

By design or injury, the IceDogs iced one of the youngest team in the Eastern Conference last weekend. Niagara’s roster used a combined 10 - 04 and 05 rookies to defeated Barrie (6 rookies and 5 NHL drafted players) and Oshawa (5 rookies and 2 NHL drafted players).

ICEDOGS SPOTLIGHT ON…
Tucker Tynan named OHL Goaltender of the Week.

This week, IceDogs go back-to-back against the 2nd of the 3 elite Eastern conference teams (Barrie, Hamilton and Kingston).

FRIDAY and SATURDAY vs…

HAMILTON BULLDOGS
TEAM CORE
OA-01 N.Mutter
OA-01 C.Kammerer
OA-01 N.Staios
02 J.Mysak (IMPORT Drafted – SIGNED)
02 L.Morrison
02 A.Hayes
02 G.Diaco
02 G.White
03 A.Grushnikov (IMPORT) (Drafted - 2nd Rd)
03 R.Winterton (Drafted - 3rd Rd)
03 L.Sherk
03 C.Romeo (Drafted - 7th Rd)
03 E.Burroughs
+ 04s J.Donovan; J.Melee; P.Thomas
+ 05s DRAFT: 1st – F Alex Pharand, 3rd – F Cole Brown, 3rd – D Noah Roberts, 4th D Lucas Moore

BLACKSOX OUTLOOK: The Bulldogs return another veteran laden team in 21-22. The Bulldogs are led by a solid group of OAs, several quality 02s, a pair of outstanding IMPORTS, 4 NHL drafted players – and a lineup with 5 (04/05) rookies. The Bulldogs will be battling for positioning within the Top 3 this season.

OHLPROSPECT (Brock Otten) OUTLOOK:
Hamilton Bulldogs: I think the Bulldogs are possibly the most well rounded team in the Conference on paper. They have depth at all positions and they have one of the strongest OA groups in the OHL this year. Between one of Costantini and Drobac, the goaltending should be more than adequate. The forward group competes extremely hard and will bring a lot of physicality, in addition to skill. Expect Jan Mysak, Logan Morrison, and Tag Bertuzzi to have huge years in particular. Of course, Ryan Winterton is also a favourite of mine. The real wild card is Artyom Grushnikov. The Dallas Stars second rounder has been turning heads in Traverse City and he could be an immediate impact player and number one defender for the Bulldogs. If he can elevate this defensive group, they could truly challenge for the top spot in the Conference. Look for preseason breakout star Gavin White to have a big year on the backend too.

Well DE104, hope you are tuning it much later because at the end of the first it is 2-0 Hamilton. There were very few times in the period when Niagara had much going on offensively and on defense it was haphazard.
