The point some of us is making is that just because we drafted a defenceman in the 1st and 3rd rounds does not mean our defence will be okay next year. If we had no forwards coming back who can score, do you think that by drafting a forward in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd rounds that suddenly the lack of scoring is fixed?

Thumbs up!

Stop with the common sense

Standard on the Ice Dogs for this season coming...

IceDogs ready for season of change

Draft pick Isaac Enright will be one of the players the Niagara IceDogs will be counting on this season.

Landon Cato, the Niagara IceDogs' second pick in this year's Ontario Hockey League draft, is one of the players the team will be counting on. -

This much we know for sure. There will be plenty of new faces around when the Niagara IceDogs open training camp Thursday, Aug. 22.

Gone will be mainstays including Ben Jones, Kirill Maksimov and Jason Roberson as well as assistant coach Kris Sparre and trainer Pete Dobbin.

"This is going to be the most wide-open and competitive training camp that we have had in a couple of years," IceDogs general manager Joey Burke said. "It will be exciting to watch."

The team has high hopes for draft picks Landon Cato and Isaac Enright, who will be counted on to bolster the defence.

“I think we are going to turn some heads and be better than people think we are.”

Joey Burke

Niagara IceDogs general manager

Cato's signing was a bit of a coup for Niagara. Cato might have gone higher than the third-round in the Ontario Hockey League but had verbally committed one of the NCAA's rising programs, the University of Massachusetts, which the runner-up in this year's championship tournament. Scouts consider Cato big, fast and physical and someone who will be able to contribute right away.

Enright's strengths are his quickness and hockey smarts. He played in four games against older competition with Pembroke Lumber Kings this past winter and by all accounts acquitted himself well. U16 players are only allowed to play five games under CCHL rules.

There will also be a new face on the coaching staff. Sparre, who spent three years with the IceDogs, is taking a coaching position in Austria.

"Obviously, the sooner we can get the coaching staff together, the better," Burke said. "We have had some extremely qualified coaches that have already come forward and contacted us.

"We have reached out to a couple of guys we have had in mind if we had an opening like we do now."

Billy Burke is returning for a third season as head coach and Jody Hull for a second year as associate coach,

Things will also change for IceDogs forward Phil Tomasino. His name will be called this weekend during the NHL draft in Vancouver.

One mock draft had him going in the first round at 22nd overall to the Los Angeles Kings. TSN Bob McKenzie had him rated 34th overall. NHL Central Scouting lists him as the 14th best North American skater.

Joey Burke said some teams reach out directly to the IceDogs staff for insight into potential draft picks.

"Some express a lot of interest. They will talk to me. They want to talk to Billy and the assistants. he said. "Some teams are so thorough.

"They want to talk to the academic adviser to get the full picture of what kind of player the player is on and off the ice."

Aside from Cato and Enright, the IceDogs signed goaltending draft pick Josh Rosenzweig. Scouts say Rosenzweig strengths are positioning, quick reflexes and the confidence to attack opposing shooters.

Another player to watch once camp opens is Lucas Theriault. He was drafted back in 2016, and has impressed the IceDogs staff every year in training camp, but hasn't been able to crack the roster at 5-foot-8 165 pounds.

"He absolutely ripped up the junior league up north this year," the general manager said of Theriault, who scored 40 goals in 51 games for the Soo Thunderbirds.

The team will also add to the roster in the upcoming CHL Import Draft.

The IceDogs ran their rookie orientation day on June 1. The day trip is a chance for the players to get a better look at the IceDogs as an organization.

"We keep it very casual," Joey Burke said. "We have had them on the ice that day in the past, but we found it wasn't very productive.

"It's the middle of the summer and a one-off. Everyone is a little nervous.

"What we do is show them what the area has to offer. We take them to the school they will be attending so they get a feel for that.

"We also get a chance to talk to each one of them in a one-on-one setting. That's what we have found works the best."

The newcomers will help provide a fresh start. Last season's promising beginning and blockbuster trades ended with an unexpected loss in the second round of the playoffs and sanctions from the league for recruiting violations.

For his part, Joey Burke said he can't wait for a fresh start. He knows there will be growing pains, but that's part of the cyclical nature of junior hockey.

"I think we are going to turn some heads and be better than people think we are."

With recent roster moves, there is an OA fit for Castleman (Ottawa) and Johnson (Peterborough) to return home for their final OHL season. I wonder if we see those trades?

Ottawa will still be in "go for it" mode after last year's success, and they have the picks to afford more of an impact player. I don't see either player leaving.
