Watched part of the Canada/Swiss U-18 game. The Swiss were being outplayed by Canada, but Giancarlo Chanton (02), a younger players up against tough competition, looked like a nice player. Chanton skates really well, accurate passer, competes hard, takes the man, plays the PP and kills penalties. He’s definitely 6.00 (at least) and shots left. First impression was good.

yeah, 6 feet tall and 165 is smallish. Elite Prospects stats; probably dated. so he 's more like 6 ft and 175.

I've watched Chanton play. He has decent size (at least 6.00) for a 16 year old (late birthdate too - November 29, 2002). Chanton is not NHL draft eligible until 2021. With the late birthday in 2002, he fits the IceDogs rebuild around the 2003 age group they are targeting. It's actually a smart pick, Chanton will be here for the next 3 or 4 years - along with Cato and Enright. *** Last edited by Blacksox; 06-27-2019 at 09:32 PM. |

The IceDogs, it seems, have taken the approach of rebuilding the defence corps in the last few drafts, be they domestic or import.
I’m fairly confident, even with the departures of top-end talent like Jason Robertson up front, that the Dogs will have enough goal-scoring. This is looking like a team that is going to run its offence off of a very quick transition game. The Dogs are really seeming to cling to the idea of picking the pockets of opposing forwards in the Dogs’ d-zone, and head-manning the puck up-ice for a quick offensive chance. If this approach works, it could make for a really exciting team to watch ![]() |

For those interested, I pulled a few clips from Chanton’s U18 game vs Canada. He is wearing #5 white. Shoots lefts but plays on the right side.
Keep in mind Chanton is a late 02 (part of the 03s - 2021 NHL draft class). He played very well and did not look out of place against Canada’s best 01s (2019 NHL draft class). Chanton is nice skater, accurate passer and for a 16 year old, calm with the puck against high-end 17 and 18 year olds. Also, on the Swiss goal (1:10), you can see Chanton is taller than his 5.10 and 5.11 teammates celebrating the goal. Giancarlo Chanton 2019 Swiss U18 |

IceDogs add two
By Bill Potrecz - June 28, 2019 https://www.bpsportsniagara.com/area...eechwood-golf/ “Giancarlo is an extremely complete defencemen, as a high-end left shot 02 defenceman, we address a need we had with our roster and have begun to really fill out our young roster,” IceDogs general manager Joey Burke said. “This is a guy who has captained team Switzerland, was a top pair guy on their u18 this past season competing against guys like (Phil) Tomasino, and holding his own. “He is a late birth 02 who is highly touted for his draft year and is a guy who I believe will grow and flourish with us for years to come.” |

Yes it does mean Chanton is coming to Niagara next season. Here is the statement issued by his Swiss club teams last season. Giancarlo Chanton was selected by the Niagara Ice Dogs in the draft of the Canadian junior leagues in the first round as number 46. Only 16-year-old defender Giancarlo Chanton has been drafted by the Canadian Hockey League (CHL) and will compete in the Niagara Ice Dogs in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) next season. The SCL Tigers and SCL Young Tigers wish Chanton a great success in Canada. |
