Coaches hire people they have worked with in the past all the time.
I wouldn't hire someone I have not worked with before to help my team if i owned one.
I think the problem people are having is based on track record. If they are perennial bottom feeders at the jr.b level, how would anyone expect them to have a success at a higher level?

I have never liked the concept of an associate coach. Why designate a second in command?? Having a team of competent assistant coaches led by a competent head coach fulfills that requirement in most organizations (yes, I know some NHL teams have them too). I just happen to like the traditional hierarchy.
