Not having a first round pick in 2021 is a very huge loss. They potentially could lose out on a top 5 overall pick. This team will be a bubble playoff team at best next year IMO.

At the quarter mark,02 Tucker Tynan, statistically is the best draft eligible goalie in the OHL. To start the season: 02 Tristen Lennox, 02 Joe Vrbetic and 02 Will Cranley would have been the front runners, but all three are off to a slow start. If Tucker Tynan can continue to improve and develop, he could hear his name called in 2020 (or 2021).

He has not, as of yet, put up the big offensive numbers – fans are awaiting, but there is a lot to like about 02 Jake Uberti. Uberti, a natural centre with good size (6.01 / 185 lbs – and appears to still be growing), great skating ability, fearless (drives to and not around the net), plays a 200 ft. game and his ability to win puck battles along the board, in both the offensive and defensive zones, has improved significantly in the last few weeks.

NHL scouts trying to uncover hidden gems look for those types of talents and gifts. It should not surprise IceDog fans to see Uberti become a late round pick in the 2020 NHL draft – and if he begins to light the lamp a bit after the traded deadline, Uberti will for sure be a mid-round pick.

Reviewing last years’ draft (2001 draft eligible year), some of the late round picks, where older player with good stats, except Matvey Guskov 2001, who had the least impressive stats of that group below, but went in the 5th round. In fact, those older players’ 2nd years OHL stats were not overly impressive either.

5th Round
01 Matvey Guskov (59 12G 18A 30PTS)
6th Round
99 Greg Meireles
7th Round
99 Cole Coskey
00 Tyler Angle

Betts pays off for IceDogs
By Bill Potrecz - November 12, 2019
https://www.bpsportsniagara.com/bett...f-for-icedogs/

“He came to camp and looked fantastic right away,” Burke said. “He looked like he could be a little bit of a diamond in the rough. We followed him closely during the week and he got better and better during camp.”

Once it was determined Betts was going to crack the lineup, Burke had to make a deal for his rights with Kitchener, who accepted a 10th-round pick as compensation. “Three years (of junior eligibility) for a 10th round pick is a no-brainer,” Burke said. “We jumped at that chance.”

“He’s really starting to come on now, and with our injuries is playing huge minutes for us,” Burke said. “He’s been handling them extremely well considering his age and the unconventional path he took to get to us.”

Burke has been so impressed he is already considering Betts as a possible over-age candidate down the road. “He’s proven to be of that calibre so far,” he said.

That would be odd considering this story came out today.

Sopa, a 19-year-old Swiss striker for Niagara Ice Dogs, also knows that he'll miss all of this soon - and how: "The years here are the best of my life."

And yet he is far from an NHL career or just the draft. Sopa was passed over in 2019, and in 2020 he gets a second and final chance, which is small. He still wants to use them, says Sopa. But he also says: "The world will not go under, if it does not work." His future in that case would be regulated, he "belongs" contractually until 2021 the SC Bern.

Unless traded, Sopa will finish out the season in Niagara and not Switzerland. The story mentions how he is giving the 2020 NHL draft another shot.

Unfortunately, next season, he is both an Import and an OA, so it’s likely he does not return. Personally, I would love to see Sopa back next year, but I can see a scenario were this rebuild turns this into a 1 for 2 exchange - add an 03 Import (F) and 00 OA (F).

Unknown and unranked before the season started, Tucker Tynan is shooting up the 2020 NHL Draft Board.

According to a few websites, with extended draft rankings, the only clear cut goalies ahead of Tucker Tynan are:

Projected 1st Rd
Yaroslav Askarov (G, Russia, SKA-1946 St. Petersburg MHL)

Projected 3rd Rd
Joel Blomqvist (G, Finland, Karpat U20)
Jan Bednar (G, Czech Republic, Karlovy Vary Czech)
Aidan Campbell (G, USA/Canada, Erie OHL) *Tynan won that head to head showdown last night*

Then there are a group of goalies projected between the 4th and 7th round, however, Tucker Tynan (G, USA, Niagara OHL) is ranked between #105 – 120 (4th Rd) in each of those mock drafts.

A very interesting story is unfolding in Niagara!

The Dogs have a number options for trades. At this point, I’m all about long-term gains. If the Dogs play their cards right, GM Joey could really set the Dogs up for deep postseason runs and success for years to come. If he does not, the Dogs are still set up pretty well. It’s just that one really good trade could thrust the Dogs into the OHL elite for years. It’s not that I want to see the Dogs get rid of anyone, but wouldn’t it be awesome if one day the next Crosby or McDavid was an IceDog?

Core 4 Under-24 list
By Frank Seravalli
https://www.tsn.ca/edmonton-oilers-l...king-1.1401995

Methodology: We went through every organization, isolating the top players 23-and-under who are now Core 4 players or are authentic candidates to become Core 4 players.

An impressive collection of predominately professional hockey players (along with some CHL and NCAA prospects).
<> Phil Tomasino makes the list for Nashville at #3 in 2019.

As players "age out" on the list of best young players in the world, Phil Tomasino's trade value will sky rocket next year. Looking ahead, only Arthur Kaliyev (#2 LA) and possibly Thomas Harley (#2 Dallas) will return to the OHL as NHL Core 4 (Under 24) Players.
