At this age being a good teammate and a good influence off the ice is far more important than leading on the ice. Following team rules, taking care of their bodies, eating right and being inclusive. None of us really have any clue about the most important behind the scenes leadership qualities both players possess. Both guys generally work very hard and appear to care more about the team than individual accolades IMO. Both guys care about taking care of their own end and are making great strides in being better in that area. Thomas can have a tendency to try and do too much while Jones takes far too many bad penalties for my liking.

I think they got the captain pick right with the tie breaker being that Jones is the senior player. We are lucky to have 2 top tier centres who care about their craft and put in the work to add to their portfolios year in and year out. Thomas if he's back next year will smash virtually every Niagara Icedog record in the books both single season and career IMO. He may even lead the league in scoring this year. I'm really not sure what people don't like?

Everything is always about Thomas and rarely about other players so my point is Jones earned this let him have it without the need to throw in the consistent Thomas comments.

Jones didn't skate well enough in his rookie year to be granted the same ice Akil saw. Thomas has no problem putting up points regardless of who he's playing with. He's a natural scorer with elite high end skills. He's clearly put in his work over the years to cultivate those skills. His conditioning is top notch and he comes back bigger and stronger every year. He's not being handed anything. He's earned it.

I don't disagree with the captain pick. Jones has earned it and appears ready to have a big year. He's clearly worked hard to improve his skating which was the only thing holding him back in his first 2 years IMO. I think he'll be a really good 2 way centre and finish top 10 in points. Can't really ask for much more.

"C" Jones (and "A" Thomas) have the confidence of the coaching staff to follow through on their responsibilities as leaders.

Burke expects Jones, Thomas and the other leaders to police the room themselves, but also keep an open line of communication going between the players and the staff.

“The captain needs to be an extension of the coaches into the dressing room,” Burke said. “We don’t want a jailhouse snitch and Jonesy has been around long enough to understand situations that can be handled with the team and situations that arise where the coaches need to be involved.

“That’s a great asset for him. He has an excellent feel for the team and that’s one thing we want here, transparency between coaches and players and having the ability to communicate.”

Burke said it’s vital the players feel the room is their sanctuary. “We’re not in there. We don’t want to hang out. We need leaders we can trust and be on the same page,” he said. “We need to give them their space and show the players the respect that we’re not babysitting them.

“We want to treat them like pros and the message is we’re all in this together. We have success together and we lose together.”

Jones said he has no problem being a conduit between the staff and the players.

“We have such a great group I don’t foresee any problems but if something does arise, the letters and good character guys in the room have to figure out what’s going on and have a talk with the coaches if we need to,” he said. “There’s going to be up times, down times and times when guys are good and times when guys are mad. We’re focused on the same goal — to be playing hockey as long as we can and make it to the Memorial Cup.”

Imagine the angst among the fan base if we had not drafted Akil Thomas and took oh say the player who the troops chose instead with the next pick Adam McMaster (a local kid I might add)? Lol

Fickle fan base .....

No one in this league is perfect .... Thomas is not perfect but he’s damn good .... if they were perfect ... they wouldn’t be in the OHL as 18 yo they would be in the NHL ....

Thomas and Jones are both great players but the Captain designation is for leadership. Jones fulfills that role better than Thomas - I watched them through last season, on ice, in the community, with the coaches and officials. Jones displayed more leadership characteristics than Thomas. Thomas is more of an individual rather than a leader and that's fine. Jones may never have the skill that Thomas has, but he is a better leader.

I don't think we have ever had a player with as much attention given to him by the coaching staff. Yes he is a great talent but he has also been supported more than any great talent that came before him.

From a Vegas site from before and after camp on Jones...

http://sinbin.vegas/golden-knights-prospect-rankings/

Before camp: The last skater selected by the Golden Knights in the 2017 Entry Draft was one of the eight players from that draft who signed a contract. He was a bit more noteworthy in 2017 than 2018, but there was nothing glaring to the negative either year. Jones had a huge year in Niagara scoring 79 points in 68 games and added 12 more in 10 playoff games. Late round picks have an incredibly low success rate, which is why he is so low on this list, but he’ll be a guy to keep an eye on in Training Camp this year. Wouldn’t be a major surprise if he’s top 15 or even top 10 by the time he heads back to Niagara.

After camp:Here’s a guy who took a nice step in the right direction at Rookie Camp. Jones is probably not ever going to be a top-six type player, but he has workhorse bottom-six guy written all over him. He has a Pierre-Edouard Bellemare style to his game. He’s an excellent penalty killer, always seems to be in the right place defensively as a center, and just outworks guys all over the ice. The 7th Round pick definitely didn’t look like it among a group of players drafted above him.

Didn't look like he played in their exhibition game yesterday that had Pacioretty debut. Another one tomorrow. Have to imagine he is sent back soon?

Really? You think Thomas earned his spot. Thomas had the red carpet rolled out before him. He is a good player but nobody has ever been propped up as much. Jones earned his spot, nobody gave him anything.
