Congrats to Dougie, well derserved!
![]() ![]() Go to the head of the class Posted By BILL POTRECZ , STANDARD STAFF When he's not hitting opposition forwards on the ice, Dougie Hamilton is hitting the books. The 16-year-old Niagara IceDogs rookie defenceman has been named this year's winner of the Ivan Tennant Award as the Ontario Hockey League's top academic high school student. Hamilton is the third member of the IceDogs to win the award, following in the footsteps of older brother Freddie, who won the award last season, and Niagara-on- the-Lake's Alex Friesen, the 2007-08 winner Hamilton was named the winner based on his 97% average in Grade 11 at Governor Simcoe Secondary School. "My family thinks of school as very important and my brother won the award last year, so it was one of my goals at the start of the year to win the award," Hamilton said. "I'm pretty proud." Hamilton took some pointers from his older brother. "For sure," he said. "I pretty much follow what he does. "He's a good role model. I follow how he acts in school and pretty much every other place. It's easy. I follow him so I know what to do in order to get the good marks." Hamilton, who is studying English, biology, chemistry, two maths and physics, doesn't have a particular favourite class. "I don't really think so," he said when asked to choose a subject he enjoys the most. "I enjoy all of them." Compiling an average pushing perfection is tough enough, but to do it as a rookie in the OHL seems almost unfathomable. "I don't do it (schoolwork) on the bus, it's just time management," Hamilton said. "You have to know when you're going away and when you have time to do the work. "You know you have to get it done before you go away so you can hand it in when it's needed." Hamilton got another bit of good news this week when he was named to the OHL's all-rookie second team. Despite playing a demanding position, Hamilton logged a large amount of ice time and responded well to the responsibility. He posted three goals and 13 assists for 16 points in 64 games to go along with some solid defensive play. "It would have been nice for our team to get a little further in the playoffs, but getting a little bit of individual recognition is nice, for sure," he said. Hamilton, who was also a finalist for the league's Emms Family Award for the OHL rookie of the year, which went to Peterborough Petes forward Matt Puempel, is the first Niagara IceDog to be named to an OHL All-Rookie Team. The first team consists of centre Boone Jenner of the Oshawa Generals, left winger Matt Puempel of the Peterborough Petes, right winger Gabriel Landeskog of the Kitchener Rangers, defencemen Ryan Murphy of Kitchener Scott Harrington of the London Knights and goaltender Michael Houser of London. The second team consists of centre Ivan Telegin of the Saginaw Spirit, left winger Michael Curtis of the Belleville Bulls, right winger Austen Brassard of Belleville, defencemen Geoffrey Schemitsch of the Owen Sound Attack and Hamilton and goaltender Petr Mrazek of the Ottawa 67's. Ice chips:IceDogs captain Andrew Agozzino is pointless in two games with the Peoria Rivermen of the American Hockey League. Agozzino joined the Rivermen on an amateur tryout contract.... Freddie Hamilton was held off the scoresheet for Canada in a 3-1 loss to Switzerland in their opening game at the world under-18 championships in Belarus. Canada plays again Thursday morning against the host nation.... Former IceDogs defenceman Matt Corrente has been recalled from the AHL by the New Jersey Devils. The Devils take on the Philadelphia Flyers in the first round of the NHL playoff s. |

Way to go Dougie.
I really take pride in our guys winning stuff like this. It's definitely big bragging rights across the entire OHL. |

Way to go Dougie...that is quite an achievement and requires a lot of self control and time management. That is three Ice Dogs in a row to win that award...are we a smart team or what!!! Keep up the great work Dougie.

I think that having such focused and well grounded parents have been a blessing to both Freddie and Dougie...way to go Mom and Dad...you made sure the boys know what is important and haven't let your own notoriety stop you from guiding your kids in the proper manner.

I think hockey parents in general are some of the most under-appreciated people in the world. It's not until well after the kids grow up, when they have jobs they have to be at all day long, and bills to pay, and things to fix, and others well-being that they're responsible for, that they can really appreciate mom and/or dad waking up at 5am to get them to 6am practice, cleaning off the snowy car in the dark of winter early morning, then sitting countless hours in those cold rinks. It's only now that I can really appreciate all the sacrifice my parents went through for all those years so that I could play.
