This was on the icedogs site today:
August 04, 2010 IceDogs defenceman Dougie Hamilton has been named to the Team Canada Summer Under-18 team that will participate in the 2010 Memorial of Ivan Hlinka tournament in the Czech Republic and Slovakia from August 9th-14th. Hamilton is one of 22 players on the team and among seven defencemen to make the roster. He is also among 13 OHL players to make the team, which will be coached by Belleville Bulls head coach George Burnett. This will mark the second time Dougie will have competed in an international tournament, having also been a part of the silver medal winning Team Ontario at the 2010 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge this past January. Canada has won the Memorial of Ivan Hlinka in five of the past six years, and will play in Group B with Slovakia, Sweden and Switzerland, a group that will be based out of Piestany, Slovakia. Group A, which consists of the Czech Republic, Finland, Russia and the United States, will play out of Breclav, Czech Republic. Canada will face the Czech Republic in an exhibition game in Breclav on Saturday, August 7 before opening the tournament against Sweden on Monday, August 9. The top two teams from each group advance to the semifinals on Friday, August 13, with the gold medal game scheduled for Saturday, August 14. The IceDogs would like to wish Dougie the best of luck in the tournament and look forward to hopefully seeing him return home with the Gold! |

Dream come true for Dougie Hamilton
Posted By BILL POTRECZ , STANDARD STAFF Posted 23 hours ago
It's been quite a summer of accomplishment in the Hamilton household. On the heels of older brother Freddie Hamilton being chosen by the San Jose Sharks in the fifth round of the National Hockey League draft comes news that defenceman Dougie Hamilton has been selected to represent Canada on the national men's summer under-18 team at the 2010 Memorial of Ivan Hlinka Tournament in Breclav, Czech Republic and Piestany, Slovakia. "It's probably one of the best vacations you can have," Dougie Hamilton said. "Anytime you can put on the Canadian jersey, it's a lot of fun and it's been a dream of mine ever since I was a little kid. "It's a dream come true and I'm really happy and excited for the opportunity." Hamilton said it's been a memorable summer for the family. "For sure. We both put in a lot of hard work," he said. "Freddie puts in a lot of hard work and I just follow him. "He represented Canada and he helped me out at lot in these experiences. It was nice for him to get rewarded and for me to get rewarded later." The roster was finalized following a four-day selection camp in Calgary that included daily practices and three inter-squad games. Niagara IceDogs coach/general manager Marty Williamson has seen how international experience can help a player. "Those are just wonderful experiences," Williamson said. "You do nothing but gain benefits from it and it rounds you out as a hockey player. He'll be put in a good role there and it really helps us. "It's a real benefit for our team and our organization." Hamilton, who turned 17 in June, showed flashes of potential in his rookie campaign with the IceDogs, finishing with three goals and 16 points in 64 games. Williamson sees the big rear-guard playing an even bigger role on the team this season. "He's really going to blossom," Williamson said. "I wasn't sure if he was going to make that team, but to be in that final group of defencemen from across Canada, that shows what he's going to be able to do for us this year. That's what I'm excited about. We really can use that big stud back there. The last one was (Alex) Pietrangelo and now it's Dougie." Canada will face the Czech Republic Saturday in an exhibition game before opening the tournament against Sweden Monday. The top two teams from each group advance to the semifinals Friday, Aug. 13 with the gold-medal game set for Aug. 14. There is no television or radio coverage of the event. Complete coverage can be found at www.hockeycanada.ca. One of the 22 players named to the roster is former IceDogs draft choice Lucas Lessio, who is committed to the Oshawa Generals for the 2010-11 season. The IceDogs traded Lessio's rights to the Generals and will now receive London's second-round selection in 2012 and Oshawa's second-round selection in 2013. If Lessio plays a second season in Oshawa, Niagara would receive two third-round selections, in 2012 and 2013, and a fourth-round pick in 2014. "You have to give credit to (former GM) Dave Brown. He made a good deal there and it's going to help this organization down the road," Williamson said. "When you lose a first-round pick like that, you've got to be able to make up for it, and with the two first-round picks this year, that's going to help us in the future, and those draft picks are going to give me a chance to manoeuvre around, and if there's a prize catch we can throw an awful lot at it." The IceDogs open training camp Aug. 31. |

Non-stop summer for Hamilton
Sports Posted By JIM WALLACE , STANDARD STAFF Posted 2 days ago Dougie Hamilton has had to keep his skates sharp this summer. There's been little rest for the Niagara IceDogs defenceman since the end of the Ontario Hockey League season, first being named to the second rookie all-star team, then receiving an invitation to the Canadian under-18 team that recently won a gold medal at the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament in the Slovakia and Wednesday, hitting the ice for two days in the National Hockey League research and development camp in Toronto. "Looking back, it has been," he replied when asked if the summer had been a blur, adding that he hadn't expected this when he was drafted by the IceDogs in the second round of the 2009 draft. It has, however, been an experience he's enjoyed, especially suiting up first with the best under-18 players in Canada, and then squaring off against the best in the world in his age group. "It was a lot of fun. Calgary (the under-18 team's training camp) was a fun experience with the 40 best players in Canada, then recognized as one of the top 22 in Canada was a big honour. "I was excited to represent my country against the world." Hamilton, who turned 17 on June 17, said he really didn't know what to expect in the Czech Republic. "I hadn't played a game in a while, so it was a good experience and a good way to start the season," he said. His role was to shut down the opposition's top lines and he also took a regular turn killing penalties. Offensively, he picked up a goal and two assists for Team Canada, which won the tournament for the third straight year and the sixth time in seven years. "They really didn't want me to play offensive, but any offensive pitch by me was a help to our team. It's a lot harder playing in the OHL because guys are a lot bigger, so you can't play the physical way you can against guys your age." It was a slightly different role than he played as a rookie with the IceDogs last year when he would jump into the offence just about any time. "I was lucky last year to get some power plays and some offensive and defensive opportunities with the penalty kill. It was really nice." Hamilton, who returned from Slovakia Sunday afternoon, has had little time to shake off the jet lag before heading to Toronto to help the NHL test some new rules and have a reunion of sorts with some of his Team Canada mates. "We're there two days and play four games with different rules in each game, he said of the camp. "It should be fun and I know a bunch of people from the Canadian team, so we'll get back together after two days, which is kind of cool." The summer that never ends continues in less than two weeks with the start of the IceDogs training camp. There's a little different buzz in the air, with the Marty Williamson (coach and general manager) era beginning and ex-NHLer Mike Van Ryn coming on in his first coaching position. "It will be a good experience for everyone and I think we'll learn a lot from both coaches," Hamilton said, agreeing Van Ryn, not out of the NHL for even a year, can add a lot. "If he brings stuff he knew and brought to his NHL game and can teach us, all the defence-men will benefit, and so will the forwards, with that NHL experience." About the only thing missing from Piestany is a gold medal to show for the team's 1-0 win over the United States in the final, courtesy of Ryan Nugent- Hopkins' goal and shutout goal-tending by Tyson Teichmann of the Belleville Bulls. "I think they send us medals, so hopefully we'll get them during the season." |
