Just a gut feeling but after the trades today I thought we’d be going for it again in 2023

IceDogs would have quite the collection of players drafted in the higher rounds and draft picks to use in trades that year.

Default ICEDOGS' DRAFT PICKS UPDATED

Thanks for the update!

This thread should be a sticky ...

It would be really cool to see now, what the draft pick cupboard looked like in year one our previous rebuild (culminating in the 2019 run)... I’d be curious to know if we had as much high end picks or not as we do now?

If I had to guess, my hunch would be, I would say our draft pick situation is better for this rebuild than it was for the previous rebuild (even considering we are missing our first rounder)
I don’t remember unloading three key players in the same season like we just did ...

Just so we don't forget about the wonderful Sam Militec trade, I have updated the chart in this post, to what it would look like, if JB wasn't frittering away valuable 2nd round picks..... These are denoted by the color brown, with the wonderful avatar...since the Militec trade stunk!

I will stop carrying on with this trade, when:

(a) the last of the players drafted with these picks, is out of the OHL (could be like 2029/2030, wow!),
(b) the icedogs win the OHL championship, or
(c) I am no longer above ground ...

Whichever comes first, which I'm hoping is either (a) or (b)!

Following the 2016 championship run, IceDogs hockey operations began the rebuild process, for the next generation, with the 2016 Priority Draft, followed by the trades of Chris Paquette and Graham Knott to recoup picks.

Using the picks that remained after the 2016 trades, along with picks acquired in the Paquette and Knott trades, here are the high draft picks (first 4 rds) the IceDogs had in their cupboard going forward (and who they selected).

2016 DRAFT
1 Thomas
2 No Pick
3 No Pick

4 MacPherson
4 Castleman

2017 DRAFT
1 Tomasino
2 Constantino
3 Martin
4 No Pick

2018 DRAFT
1 Moore
2 No Pick
3 Halliday (DNR)

4 Uberti
4 Desimone

As a result of these trades, Niagara has 16 picks in the first 4 rounds over the next 3 OHL Priority Drafts - and 10 of those picks will be in round 2 and 3. In the last rebuild, the IceDogs had only 3 (2nd and 3rd round) picks in the subsequent 3 OHL Drafts.

This IceDogs is rebuild (and future) has the potential to be significantly better - with a lot more higher round drafted players and the possibility of being a successful team over multiple years, by acquiring and drafting players in the 02 -05 age group.

***

Since, this has been posted as a sticky, I will track the players drafted (or traded for) using all these picks the IceDogs have accumulated. Player names will be added in GREEN on POST #1.

IceDogs do the right thing dealing stars
By Bill Potrecz - January 15, 2020

https://www.bpsportsniagara.com/iced...dealing-stars/

More than one fan I’ve come across has wondered aloud why the team would trade their two best players... Thomas will turn pro next season and be gone, and while Tomasino has one year of junior eligibility remaining, there continue to be whispers he may have a chance to crack Nashville’s lineup next season as a 19-year-old. With those factors in mind, IceDogs general manager Joey Burke struck while the iron was hot.

Whoever those ‘fans’ are they are obviously not die hard OHL fans ... any hard core fan would know that these trades were inevitable ...

Just reading about the haul on the Tomasino trade again

I’m a JB basher but that’s was a genius move by him

Imagine if (a) tomasino gets hurt or (b) unlikely - but - he sticks with Nashville all year? There is no protection in this deal for Oshawa if either of those happen ... I still say (b) is ridiculously highly unlikely ....

But could you imagine being an Oshawa fan during training camp next year and worrying about his status every day?
