To be honest that was something I never really considered when I posted that the IceDogs should trade Tomasino next year. In his “OHL 21: Diseccting the Deals”, sports writer Josh Brown (Waterloo Regional Record) wrote: Warning: Generals fans avert your eyes. There is a growing camp that believes Tomasino might just make the leap to the Nashville Predators next season. This does not necessarily mean Tomasino will make the NHL next year, but the fear for Niagara and Oshawa was and is real. And since it is no longer something we need to concern ourselves with, it would be amazing to see Phil Tomasino make the NHL coming out camp this year – couldn’t happen to a nicer and more talent kid – the most talented we have seen in an IceDogs jersey! Should have got your jersey signed Strohs! |

As much as that would be awesome for him I just can't see him in the bigs next year. Will likely get a good long look though.
However, if there is a belief that it may happen, I'm surprised there were no conditional picks in the trade. |

I was very surprised that there were no conditional picks too. I would be surprised if he sticks in the NHL next year .... But if he adds a lot of muscle in the offseason anything could happen I remember how frustrating It was the year the Blues kept Petro and barely played him that first season and only returned him late to niagara for them to trade him at the O deadline Would suck for generals if Tomo stays in NHL, plays 8-9 games over a couple months, is returned, then Goes to world juniors .... could have paid a lot of draft pick currency for less than a full season of games played next year .... i guess where it counts is you want him in the lineup come playoff time Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Surprise the Generals gave up that many picks for Tomasino for a team that hopes to host the next Memorial Cup.

That trade was an explosively high risk for Oshawa. What defuses that risk is a Memorial Cup. Walking away with that glittering trophy this May would justify the tremendous cost Oshawa paid. But even if the Gens win in it all, as we know, our buddy Phil Tomasino could get called up by the Nashville Predators, and that would change things, that would tip the scales decidedly in the favour of the IceDogs.
And this trade is going to benefit the IceDogs for a long time. Sometimes I have to pinch myself - I still can’t believe how many picks JB was able to scam Oshawa out of. That’s a franchise’s worth of draft picks in one transaction. What if, two years from now, JB has the Dogs in contention, and Burke uses just a few of Oshawa’s picks to acquire the final piece of a Memorial Cup winner?(with Phil Tomasino skating for the Nashville Predators) |

Actually Oshawa gave away all (but one) of those picks to acquire Saigeon and Mattinen last year.

The Dogs gave up: 3.5-4.5 yrs of Lleyton Moore 1.5 yrs of Tomasino A boat load of picks The Dogs got: 3 months of Studnicka 3 months of Brassard A bigger boat load of picks. Oshawa embarrassingly knocked out the Dogs and will be the odds on favorite to win the OHL next year (maybe the Memorial Cup) They’re clearly the favorite to host the Memorial Cup. I’m sure they don’t give a rats ass, if a couple of the picks they gave up bring the Dogs some success a few years down the road. |
