I remember an article or an interview where he was asked about his Junior B record. His response was something along the lines of, there is no draft in Junior B. Players can go wherever they want.

1) Why didn't they want/choose to play in Brantford?
2) What good is the "no draft" reasoning if you're going to trade your draft picks away?

There is no such thing as avoiding a rebuild. If you build toward a great team one year and put all the eggs in one basket, you will invariably rebuild. In Niagara's case, and in many other clubs, it is a tumultuous rebuild, like starting from nothing. There are ways to avoid this level of decimation and I am thinking DD is hoping to prove he can do it.

1) Attract Talent:
Win hockey games, build a brand that people want to play for. London does this well. They have a great reputation for winning, coaching and training. Their number one picks report there, and so do many other teams' number one picks.

2) Draft Better:
Spend the time reviewing the upcoming talent. Know what is out there and what you need. I always felt with Niagara that they were distracted by something shiny and tried to build a team around that piece rather than having a team and getting the parts you need. Drafting means the scouts and the organizations knowing the players, and the players knowing the team and how they would fit in. It is about relationships and "fit". If you do this, your top draft picks are already on board and know what to expect. Taking a flyer on someone is a great way to have regret.

3) Train & Coach:
How many times have we seen top-rated talent come our way only to languish? We have actually seen players get worse as the years go on, to say nothing of the ones who just never got any better - peaking as a 16 year old. The coaches and trainers need to establish a regimen that develops players.

4) Culture:
This whole issue is about establishing a culture within the organization and getting the buy-in from the players. Probably this is the biggest downfall in Niagara. We have seen that winning culture and seen older players inspire the newer additions. We could all think back to an era where the culture of the organization gelled, and then a long drought where it was absent. Being a good player, a culture of ONE, has been evident for some time in Niagara.

5) Multi-year plan:
Running a team should be chess, not checkers. Take a long strategy on the team's development and have measurable matrices to see if they are there. If the team is not developing, it may be the players, the coach, the trainers, the systems - but it can't be all of them and you can't keep guessing from year to year. Rolling the dice on a season when something is off is a recipe for disaster. Make adjustments but have a longer range plan.

I don’t like this trade at all. We drafted Roobroeck in the third round. He had a decent rookie season last year scoring 8 goals. I would have liked to see how he develops. An 8th round draft pick does not seem like enough. I guess time will tell.

I can't say I am surprised, I was all for trading him early last season. He couldn't skate well (common for really tall players), he was gentle and he had very little hockey sense. I kept waiting for him to blossom into a better player but it didn't happen.

I personally thought it would be Agostinelli going but I guess this makes sense 8 goals isn’t terrible but it’s not what was expected either (I’d bet they expected 12-15 goals) as for the price I think maybe they get a 6th but doubt it would’ve been better. As for his development who knows how that would go cause once everyone is playing he’d probably be a 3rd or 4th liner

I agree. There was a lot of complaints about him early last season on this board. He did seem to improve by the end.

His high draft was likely just because of his size.

In minor hockey, size often equates to skill. When you get to OHL, if you can't back size up with skill, speed or even aggression, it becomes a liability.
