Default Will Niagara win the Eastern Conference for the regular season?

Following Maddog's suggestion yesterday, Here we go......

Can Niagara win the Eastern Conference at the end of the regular season and finish ahead of Ottawa or Oshawa?
That would give us home ice for all of the eastern conference playoff series except for the OHL final.

We are just a small handful of points behind Ottawa and we still have a game in hand.

Remembering that our team has played almost a third of the schedule without icing a full roster.

Interesting, maybe, line of conversation.

Thanks again Maddog

I think all, or at least, most IceDog fans would say the key is to avoid Sudbury and Ukko Pekka Luukonen in the second round of the playoffs. With that being said as things now right now (today) we would avoid them. We would play Oshawa, while OTTAWA would play Sudbury. I would take that any day of the week.

So perhaps we don't want to finish first in the East, because I have a feeling the standings will stay like this, and we can avoid Lukkonen:

Luukonen has not played well last two starts his gaa against the Dogs is an even three winning two of three.

I don't think so. A quick glance at the 67's remaining schedule, what stands out is.... 4 games against Kingston, 3 against Hamilton, 3 against the Petes, 2 against Mississauga and one against each of Kitchener and Barrie. Tough to make up points when the team you're chasing has a patty cake schedule like that down the stretch,

And I don’t think it helps the dogs that they play 1 more time (but in Ottawa) and it’ll be our third game in as many nights

Hmmm, that does make things a little tougher, but like Miley Cyrus said, “It’s all about the climb”.

With a game in hand the IceDogs can get to within 5 points – and with a tough schedule for Ottawa the weekend - this could possibly be that chance to get within 2 or 3 points of them. Then the race is on! Junior hockey - anything can happen!

Fri, Jan 25 OTT v OSH 0 7:35 pm
Sat, Jan 26 OSH v OTT 0 3:30 pm
Sun, Jan 27 SAG v OTT 0 2:00 pm

If they end up winning all three of those games, Ottawa will be tough to catch, but if they stumble this weekend...looking ahead they still have Guelph once and Oshawa a couple more times!

Let’s not forget we also have Soo (twice I believe) and Ottawa which like I mentioned in my last post is during a 3 in 3

Thanks to the schedule-maker, the next 2 weeks (or 6 games) will provide us with the answer! By 10:00pm, Saturday, Feb 2nd, we’ll know if there is any chance of winning the East.

Ottawa is heading into the toughest part of their schedule - culminating with a showdown against the IceDogs!

OTTAWA
Fri, Jan 25 OTT v OSH
Sat, Jan 26 OSH v OTT
Sun, Jan 27 SAG v OTT
--------------------------
Wed, Jan 30 KGN v OTT
Fri, Feb 1 GUE v OTT
Sat, Feb 2 NIAG v OTT

ICEDOGS
Thu, Jan 24 ER v NIAG
Sat, Jan 26 NIAG v SAR
Sun, Jan 27 NIAG v WSR
---------------------------
Thu, Jan 31 SSM v NIAG
Fri, Feb 1 NIAG v KGN
Sat, Feb 2 NIAG v OTT

If the IceDogs hop on that bus 3 or 4 points behind Ottawa (with a game in hand), game on!

If they return, 6 or 7 points back - the IceDogs need to focus their attention on winning games (#2 seed), but resting players/goalies - to make sure everyone is completely healthy for a long playoff run.

Now that I have thought this through - not sure which scenario I actually prefer. Advantages to both!
