It is a well known fact the team struggles to attract new billets. You only need to watch the recent billet appreciation video to realize many of these houses are double and triple booked. Good people do it because they are fans of the game and are willing to contribute their own resources to offset the lack of meaningful compensation. Think of what AAA parents have to go through for their kids, now multiply that by a factor of ten for OHL. Special meals, ice baths, laundry, workouts, school, practices, games, travel, social events, community events, drama, more smelly laundry, player's parent's drama, and all the usual teen stuff mixed in with ice time, line position, scouts, the draft, and on and on. All that joy for $500 a month?

It won't surprise me if the billets demand better pay, or stop signing up altogether. The team has to realize that compensating billet families properly is still cheaper than institutional residences.

“We were in a position to be able to draft a talent like Daniil, and to get this commitment speaks volumes about where our program currently is, and how serious we are about where we want to be in the near future”

- Joey Burke

Ryan Kennedy @THNRyanKennedy
Danil Gushchin is no guarantee for OHL Niagara; the 2020 NHL prospect is also weighing options in Finland...

Sam Stern @SternScouting
I doubt that Daniil Gushchin will report to Niagara...

Jokke Nevalainen @JokkeNevalainen
Whichever #Liiga team is trying to sign Gushchin, they definitely should work hard to close the deal…

Many thought 02 Daniil Gushchin would not sign with the IceDogs. Last year, he shunned the Regina Pats (7th overall) and this year had several pro options. To land one of the elite talents available in the 2020 Import draft, Joey Burke did an outstanding job of recruiting – especially when you consider the unpredictable OHL landscape in 20-21. This type of signing can only assist the IceDogs with future recruitment efforts of big name stars.

Along with the cumulative return of Phillip, Paquette, Hunter, Sopa, Thomas and Tomasino trades, IceDog fans have to be impressed by what Joey Burke has accomplished during a pandemic. Along with signing Daniil Gushchin and securing the return of Import GC Chanton, Joey locked up the IceDogs first five 04 draft picks in quick order. He has injected 6 young talented players into this rebuild – and Joey Burke is not done yet, with trades and possible signing still in play.

It will be interesting to see, if Joey can get one or two of their more intrigue prospects to attend camp…

02 LW Stephen Halliday (6.03 / 220) - committed University North Dakota (20-21)
02 LD David Gucciardi (6.01 / 180) – committed Michigan State (20-21) Note: Teammate of Gushchin for part of the 19-20 season.
03 LW Riley Brueck (6.00 / 170) – no ncaa commitment drafted by USHL Lincoln Stars
03 RW Cole Eichler (6.00 / 190) – no ncaa commitment
03 RD Tyler Procious (5.10 / 175) – no ncaa commitment
03 LD Ethan Mistry (5.09 / 165) – committed Brown University (22-23)
03 RW Gregory Spitzngal (6.02 / 201 ) - According to JB, excepted to attend IceDogs camp.

An outstanding job of recruitment by Joey Burke during a pandemic, but this IceDogs' Alumni news...

...is noteworthy. Five different sources have two former IceDogs’ (Alex Pietrangelo and Dougie Hamilton) as projected members of the 2022 Olympics Team Canada roster
