Game Thread 2019 Playoffs - Round 1 - Conference Quarter Finals

As in previous years, this will be the thread for Round 1. Anything related to Round 1 across the OHL is fair game in this thread, there will not be individual threads for each game.

PLAYOFFS ROUND 1 vs NORTH BAY

Do you need to get excited for playoff hockey…

If that didn’t do it…

Do you need to get excited for this IceDogs’ team…

Niagara’s 95 points season left them 2 points shy of tying the point total of the best team in IceDogs’ history (2011-2012 / 97 points).

With the IceDogs 8-2-0-0 (and longest current win streak) over the last 10, they enter the playoffs as the hottest team in the OHL.

The six game win streak to close out the season helped the IceDogs secure the Central Division championship. The last IceDogs team to accomplish that feat was the 2011-2012 team.

The Niagara IceDogs have three 100 point scorers (Jones and Thomas) and the other one only won the OHL scoring championship (Jason Robertson). The last team to accomplish that won the Memorial Cup (2016 London Knights – Marner, Dvorak and Thachuk).

Add the #17 Jack Studnicka,#25 Kirill Maksimov and #40 Phil Tomasino scorer to the offence – and you have the highest scoring team in the OHL (326 goals) and in IceDogs history (2011-2012 / 291 goals)

Not to be overlooked but 11 players scored in double digits this year.

Stephen Dhillon ended up tied for 1st in wins with UPL (38 wins). As a team, the IceDogs gave up the 3rd fewest goals (209) – only Sudbury (206) Ottawa (183) gave up fewer goals.

Here is a snapshot of the IceDogs 1st round matchup:

Niagara Ice Dogs
3 – 98s – 1 NHL DRAFTED
12 - 99s - 7 NHL DRAFTED
3 – 00s – 1 NHL DRAFTED
2 – 01s

North Bay Battalion
3 – 98s
5 - 99s
6 – 00s
6 – 01s

North Bay does not have any NHL drafted players (yet), but they are led offensively by one of the league best players (Justin Brazeau) and a strong supporting cast: Matthew Struthers, Brandon Coe, Luke Burghardt, Brad Chenier, Nick King and GK Christian Propp.

The IceDogs enter this series as a considerably older team than NB and with a significant edge in playoff experience.
<>Niagara’s roster has a combined total of 314 playoff games.
<>North Bay’s roster has a combined total of 129 playoff games

North Bay is a big, physical team with some high end skill players – and a goalie capable of stealing games. DO NOT expect NB to be the same team we saw in game 68.

This is the playoffs! Get playoff LOUD IceDog fans!

INJURY UPDATE:
Burke thinks the entire roster may be ready for game one.

Thank you, Blacksox, and you're right we need the Meridian Centre to be the black hole Billy Burke has mentioned in the past.

Lots of comparisons to the last great Niagara team. Didn't they lose to London?

The IceDogs share some similarities to the 2012 IceDogs team but also the 2016 London Knights team that won the Memorial Cup.

One thing I’ve learned watching OHL hockey as opposed to the NHL, is to expect a playoff series to NOT go the way you think it will. Yes, the Batallion are a team that really rely on their ‘best players to be their best players’, and often as not, they are. While not blessed with the ability to roll four scoring lines like the Dogs are, they are a team that surely knows that the key to beating Niagara will lie in their own ability to make the Dogs take stupid penalties. Have we not seen how maddeningly awful OHL refs can be(Coloumbe, Hamilton, Ferguson, I’m looking at you)? The Battalion are surely going to know who to give that extra poke, slash, shot to(Kirill ‘the human penalty magnet’ Maksimov.
I think the IceDogs will win this series, likely in 6. But the two wins the Batallion are going to get, they’ll get because they’ll go 6-for-30 on the PP:/

Dogs had 7 forwards that averaged over a point a game. Lodnia had 45 pts in 41 games. He would of had 25-30 goals had he not been injured. ......putting aside PP time, playing for different teams injuries etc, the Dogs have 3 powerful scoring lines on paper.

Robertson-Studnicka-Lodnia 103 goals
Philip's-Jones-Maksimov 94 goals
Castleman-Thomas-Tomasino 93 goals
Sopa-Bruder-Johnson 34 goals

I remembered watching the Niagara Falls Thunder and how much firepower they had in 88-89 with Forgarty,Drulia etc. By comparison The Ice Dogs scored the most goals in the OHL with 326 in 68 games. The Niagara Falls Thunder scored 410 in 66 games
....allowed a ton of goals against too.
