Default Ice Dogs’ Power Play

The IceDogs’ PP has been a source of frustration (for fans and the coaches). Everyone expected a more effective PP as result of the players they put on the ice.

I agree with Dogs777, not of all of the blame should be placed on the coaches – they’re not the ones passing the puck into skates, but they are the only ones with the power to make changes.

So coaches, complaining is not going to make it better, if you had the opportunity to make changes, what would you do? There is always a chance someone reading this likes an idea shared on here !

A few starters to consider:
<>Which 5 players would you use?
<>How do you set them up?
<>Drop pass zone entry. Yes? No?

The 5 players I’d use on the top PP unit would be Lodnia-Jones-Thomas up front Maksimov on the left point Ham on the right. No drop pass zone entry (unless they can actually start connecting on passes) My second unit if everyone was healthy would be Philip-Tomasino-Sopa with hunter and Roberts on the back end (if/when healthy) but until that happens I’d go Constantinou and Moore

I agree with you thoughts above and thanks

However, unless the Burkes do an about face about their intentions of going all in, there are two players who are not here yet that will play on the power play down the road.

You are probably right that they’re going to add which would change the PP but that’s an easy fix Philip gets replaced by one and a D on the second unit moves off as well (if both additions are forwards they are on the second unit if one is a D then he replaces Ham on the first unit and move Ham to the second)

It's all as good as it can be right now, acknowledging that we do not have the power to make any changes. Damn !!

The vast majority of the PP time, the puck is only on Lodnia, Maksimov and Thomas’ stick. Jones is under-used, as is Sopa (in the slot).

Jones should either be instructed to pop out to receive a pass from Thomas or get to the front of the net for a screen. Often, he is kind of neither - positioned in between this two more useful spots.

Since the puck is rarely passed down low to Jones, Sopa rarely get that pass on his stick facing the net. However, we did see a little of that on Friday. So maybe changes in the PP are coming.

Love Maksimov's spot on the PP (Left Side – RH Shot - One Timers - Perfect).

Thomas’ PP position (and RH shot) limits this effectiveness. There are very few dangerous plays he can make when he gets the puck (on the right side on his right hand). His options have been: a risky drag move to the middle for a shot or what he has usually been doing - give it back to Lodnia on the backhand. With Jones on the goal line (close to the net), that lane to play it down low is often not available to Thomas.

Obviously, not something they have now, but a LH PP specialist like Saigeon or Robertson changes the PP significantly. However, the IceDogs, don’t have that, so my first attempt at fixing the PP would be to bring in Ham to the point, move Lodnia into the slot – and get Jones more involved in the PP so he can link up with Lodnia.

Bottom line, our non-existent power play sucks big time.

You as the coach, using only the players at hand - what changes would you implement to improve it?
