Not very empirical, perhaps the drugs, alcohol and mental illness contributed to their proclivity for violence?

It's absurd to think and believe that their hockey careers alone led to their demise... I'm sure there was a multitude of events that led them there

Such as not knowing they needed help because they came up in an environment where no one talked about mental health, or cared that much about it. People often saw you as less of a man for admitting you had a problem, especially in the field of mental health.

I'd like to think the game has moved past this kind of 'macho crap', but... It's hard to know for sure. Everyone says the Politically 'right' thing. And there are more than likely a vast multitude of avenues available to help a troubled player.

Alas, you can lead a horse to water ( or have all the help in the world available to the players ) but you can't make it drink.

It's absurd to think it wasn't a major contributing factor .... Tests have shown their brains have been heavily damaged ...

I remember going to a flyers Sabres game in BUF and watching meat head Andrew peters in the warmup. He honestly could barely raise the puck up off the ice . Never mind his absurd skating.

IMHO there is no need for meatheads like this in the game z. Good riddance ...

So, they died of drugs because of the mental problems caused by stresses which lead to the drugs which lead to their deaths.

That's quite a stretch in saying if they weren't fighters they would have had a life without drugs.

I seem to recall quite a few professional athletes, and other high-profile/celebrity professions that pay exhuberant amounts of money, that have been known to do drugs, and some who even died because of said drugs.

I could name quite a few guys who made their whole careers as 'fighters' in the NHL who didn't die of drug use due to depression due to fighting. And one of those guys had the *most* fights EVER in an NHL career.

Anyway, I'm not following this thread anymore. 'Just going to make my blood boil and nobody will prove the other person wrong. We have points that are not possible to prove so I'm walking away from it.

Ahh but what about all the other "fighters" who didn't have the same consequences? Are the ones mentioned the exceptions or the rule? Junk science is where you take a very small sample size with uncontrolled variables and you interpret the results over the entire population. Find a few old ladies who lived to be 105 and smoked like a chimney for a century and you could say that tobacco extended their lives.

In order to have scientific validity, you're going to need to have samples from a much larger group, including hockey players who didn't fight, or those that did fight but never showed any ill effects.

We have come a long way from "goon hockey" where members were kept on the team with little talent other than fighting. Even the modern day enforcer is a skilled hockey player in most clubs. I am not a huge fan of staged fights and I agree wholeheartedly this should be a major penalty every time, same goes for the blitz attack on an unsuspecting player who does not "drop the gloves". Hockey is an aggressive game and when things happen to warrant a legitimate fight, and two players square off against each other, I recognize this as a part of the game.
