02 David Gucciardi LHD 6.01 / 180 lbs

A hatrick of 02s for Joey Burke!

SCOUTING REPORT:
A polished smooth skating playmaking defender who plays with poise, skill and good offensive instincts from the back end. Gucciardi has the ability to possess the puck and make plays up the rink. A multi-dimensional defenseman, with a solid three-zone game and mature hockey sense. Gucciardi has all the skills to develop into a top 4 OHL defenseman. Some scouts feel he has OHL first round value and will be drafted higher than some would expect for a player with an NCAA commitment.

At the 2018 OHL priority draft NCAA Michigan State University commit David Gucciardi was selected in the 3rd round (54th overall) by the Oshawa Generals.

The IceDogs would have a detailed scouting report on Cameron Peters. He was not only Halliday’s teammates but also Lleyton Moore. He was a standout player amoungst a Marlies’ team full of stars that the IceDogs scouted heavily that year. An intriguing acquisition.

Draft Day Video Profile - Cam Peters:

OHL PROSPECTS PRE-DRAFT SCOUTING REPORT

Cameron Peters, C, Toronto Marlboros

"Cam Peters has one of the highest ceilings in the draft and oozes NHL potential. Peters is one of the most powerful centres in the draft possessing an attractive mix of size, power, speed and puck-skill making him hard to contain. Peters has the ability to step into the OHL and immediately make an impact."

Thanks for the update I didn’t know he played with Moore and Halliday so ya you gotta figure they saw that kid a ton... we will see what happens with him I guess

If the IceDogs can get David Guccardi signed in the off season, they will have assembled a goalie (Tucker Tynan) and 4 young defenseman (2 LHD and 2 RHD) with good size and skill, that will be around for the next 3 or 4 years.

Midseason Top 50 for the 2020 NHL Entry Draft (ohlprospects)
38. Tucker Tynan - Goaltender - Niagara IceDogs
In the midst of an outstanding rookie season and draft year, it was a real shame to see what happened to Tynan. He was just starting to gain steam as a draft prospect. Prior to the injury, he had one of the better save percentages in the league despite seeing among the most rubber and the most high level scoring chances on a rebuilding Niagara team. He was stealing games for the Dogs. His athleticism is outstanding. His post to post movement is elite, as is his recovery ability. The acrobatic, highlight save was routine for him. But his composure for a rookie was also impressive. Even after giving up a bad goal, or giving up several goals, his play rarely wavered which speaks volumes to his mental toughness. This kid has the potential to be one of the best goaltenders in the OHL. Small sample size or not, I'd feel comfortable drafting him with a later round pick this year. The injury did not damage major tendons/ligaments, only muscle, and a full recovery is expected.

Preliminary Top 50 for the 2020 NHL Entry Draft (ohlprospects)
35. Tucker Tynan - Goaltender - Niagara IceDogs
Tynan has been remarkable so far this year for a rebuilding IceDogs team. He's seen the most shots of any goalie in the league and it isn't really close, yet his save percentage is .920. He has decent size at 6'1. Quick movements laterally that allow him to challenge shooters and play aggressively. Makes a lot of acrobatic saves. Was tempted to put him higher, but want to see this level of play sustained.

Thanks “the dog” missed that - also includes an Honourable Mention to Jake Uberti.

NHL Central Scouting recently ranked Cameron Butler #100 amoung North American Skaters.

Draft Analyst midseason Top-300 Draft Rankings (Sporting News) has Butler ranked #169, amoung NA and European skater plus goalies, which would make him a mid 5th round selection.

The midterm scouting reports show there is certainly an opportunity for Butler to get drafted – and as hockey123 mentioned, in an earlier post, acquiring Butler could actually work out better for this IceDogs’ rebuild.

Hopefully, with an expanded role (Top 6 min., PP, PK), there is an opportunity for Cameron Butler to make an impression on NHL scouts over the final 29 games. Lodnia would be the perfect line mate and mentor for Butler. It’s something to watch and root for over the next couple of months.

Uberti Making Strides
Bill Potrecz

https://www.bpsportsniagara.com/uberti-making-strides/

“This year, I’m definitely getting a lot more opportunity and getting used to playing more minutes in the OHL,” said Uberti, a 17-year-old native of Toronto. “I’m definitely getting more comfortable playing my game and I think I’ll be able to get more comfortable as the season goes on and I progress into next year.

Uberti, who collected two goals and nine points in 59 games as a rookie, already has 11 goals and 20 points in 39 games this season.

Ed, Steve and Al discussing the IceDogs' 3 rookie defensemen during the 2019-2020 season.

Hockey Prospects Brock Otten wrote:

Isaac Enright - Defense - Niagara IceDogs
Similar to Del Mastro, Enright has been better than the stat line indicates, playing a consistent role for the rebuilding IceDogs. Smart, two-way defender with high end offensive potential. He definitely has a chance to be one of the better defenders in this OHL age group.

Interesting to look back at scouting reports prior to a player’s draft.

Prospect Pipeline (Posted on February 20, 2019)

ISAAC ENRIGHT
An intelligent two-way defenceman, Enright ranks second in points amongst 2003-born HEO defencemen. Enright is a smooth-skating defender who uses his sense and vision of the ice to remain one step ahead of the competition. His mind is one of his greatest assets, processing plays instantaneously and making wise puck and positional decisions. Enright understands when to join the rush and when to hold his position.

Moreover, his skating ability is off the charts. An effortless skater, Enright can reach top speeds in a matter of a few strides and is able to stop, start, and change directions in a flash. This talent allows him to easily stay with opponents on the rush. On the breakout, Enright can fire effective two-line passes, or rush the puck through all three zones with confidence. Within Enright’s nearly complete game which could use some perfecting, it would likely be in his strength and physicality below the dots.

Future Potential: Isaac Enright has all the makings of an effective defender for the OHL level and beyond. He checks all the boxes in terms of essentials, including impressive sense, intelligence, and decision making, as well as effortless skating and intriguing offensive upside.

Ed and Steve discussing the impressive play of Jake Uberti over the last few weeks (5 goals and 8 pts in his last 9 games).

Ranked 200th by NHL Central Scouting before this recent stretch of games. It would be great to see him finish strong to give himself a chance to be a late round NHL pick. That would be an amazing accomplishment should he hear his name called in June.

With still 8 games remaining, Jake Uberti now has: 54GP – 17G – 15A – 32 Pts. Maybe he can reach 20G-20A? There were quite a few players with fewer goals and points then Uberti, currently has, that have been drafted into the NHL in recent years.

Giancarlo Chanton is quietly having a nice first season and made a smooth and successful transition from Swiss to Canadian hockey. Sure, he has made some rookie mistakes but Chanton has proven to be quick learner - rarely repeating the same mistakes. His backward skating and use of angles is one of his many strengths. Chanton has been beaten from time to time, but more often than not, he has been excellent at keeping his man in front of him.

Chanton’s play has not gone unnoticed by on NHL scouting websites. On two extended 2021 rankings, his name appears as an NHL draft prospect. On one list, Chanton is in the top 150 and on the other, Chanton is ranked #61.

As a 16 year old, Chanton was the last defenseman cut from the 2020 Swiss World junior team. Almost assured of making the 2021 team as a 17 year old, he will gain valuable experience and development against the best 19 year olds heading into his first NHL draft.

In October 2019, Chanton was listed as one of the top 5 U-20 Swiss defenseman, despite being the youngest player on the list.

Top 5 Swiss Ice Hockey Prospects 2019 (Defensemen U20)
5 (02) G. Chanton (2021 NHL Draft)
4 (00) Janis Jerome Moser
3 (00) Nico Gross (NHL – NYR)
2 (02) Noah Delemont (2020 NHL Draft)
1 (00) Tim Berni (NHL - CLB)

A strong finish (playoff hockey unnecessary ) will give Chanton additional confidence to prepare during the off-season for what should be a big year for the Swiss / IceDogs D-Men.
