If it happens (doubt it) chance are it wouldn’t be for more than 1 year because the player he’d go for would be here for the attempted run at the final

Or no deal.
I am not giving up Tomasino for just one year. No way!

Better yet, I am not moving him at all.

There is not a chance I would move Phil Tomasino. Even if the Dogs could do another Ivan Lodnia trade, and acquire another well-established goal scorer, I would not have the Dogs become a prospect pool for the rest of the league. The IceDogs need to get better at developing their own top-tier talent.
If the Dogs can develop Philip Tomasino into what the scouts thought he would become, and Tomasino becomes a star in this league, what effect does that have on the rest of the players coming through minor midget? When these players and scouts and parents see the IceDogs churning out high-2nd round, 1st-round, then high-1st round picks, success breeds success. From Akil Thomas to Constantinou to Tomasino to Lleyton Moore and on it goes. This is how you become a franchise that players will want to come and play for.

In retrospect, that trade only showcased (again) what a smart and astute GM Joey Burke is. He knew what he was doing - Joey mentioned this new rule change almost immediately after the trade.

Sam Miletic was one of the top players in the OHL last year, he made the IceDog a much better team, help the Ice Dogs close out the season with 7 wins, win a playoff series and give the OHL champions all they could handle in round two - and he was an elite talent that Ice Dog fans could watch on a regular basis -
– all that in exchange for only 1 second round asset that he could use in his “go for it” year.

Trade Break Down:

2018 - 2nd (Panwar) was swapped for a 2018 3rd (Halliday). So that 2nd is irrelevant this year, for obvious reasons, but also 2nd round players cannot be trade in their first year anyways. So that pick does not factor into this year. If it were a 2019 2nd, that would have been different.

2024 - 2nd is the only lost asset.

2025 - 2nd cannot be used with the new OHL rules.
Great post Blacksox!!
I'm tired of hearing about the Miletic trade and the blah, blah, blah second round picks!!

Almost impossible to find an example of a team’s previous #1, who is a projected high NHL pick in his current draft year, being trade at the deadline for a big name.

There are countless examples of current #1 traded for big names. Here are just a few:

Last year, Robert Thomas, Gabe Vallarti, Sean Day, Taylor Raddysh were traded for current number ones like Connor McMichael, Cody Morgan, Hayden Fowler. The previous year, Anthony Cirelli for Allan McShane and if you go back to John Tavares (and Del Zotto) it was Christian Thomas.

Let’s hope the rule change doesn’t change that trend. Since sellers can’t get picks as far into the future as they’ve been able to, they’ll no doubt be asking for players. Tomasino looks like he can become a star. I know if I was trading with Niagara, I’d be asking for him.

GMs can certainly ask but they'll find it is easier to get blood from a stone.

No teams’ fan base would support an organization moving out their emerging stars - and the face of the franchise in their breakout draft year! It would be "recruitment and marketing" suicide for teams trying to sell and market the development of current OHL stars and future NHL stars.

Too much to lose ($$$) - plus the media attention and brand recognition a "Tomasino type" brings an organization at the NHL Draft - and the subsequent year. Having your team name attached to the drafting and development of a high-end NHL talent - creates recruitment creditability and a loyal paying fan base.
