Default Something Iíve Noticed - WJC

Something that is really starting to annoy me that I have seen a lot of in this World Juniors, and that is, what do I call it, the Sliding Block. Now, I suspect that this would be a very difficult penalty to call with consistency. However, with the weight that these kids can shoot the puck these days, a shot-blocker puts himself at significant risk for injury that will have a player missing time.
How tragic would it be in a playoff game if a star player, in a game thatís not in doubt, goes down to block a shot when itís really not necessary, and heís out of the playoffs with a broken ankle?
Or how frustrating is it to watch your team go 0-fer on powerplay after powerplay because they canít get a shot through defenders who are flopping and sliding all over the place?
Letís spin this around the other way: how much more offense could be created in all situations if a team didnít have to worry about offensive plays being ruined by defenders sliding by like lunch trays on railings?

So correct me if Iím misreading what you are saying but you are annoyed at players playing defence? if you start calling penalties on that you may as well say no defence allowed. To me it would suck if a star player got hurt on a PK in a game that is over but at the same they and the coaching staff should know better IMO 2 things should happen in that case (one much easier to do than the other) 1 donít have the star out there or 2 if he has to be out there for whatever reason tell the player no diving/sliding blocks or just blocks in general but thatís much easier said than done. As for your flip side if a team has good players they should be able to get around the flopping and sliding D.

No, I’m just saying the only one allowed to go down and slide across the ice should be the ones wearing goal pads. If you get in front of a shot and block it, fine( though your goaltender might tell you to get out of the way because he can’t see the shot).
If you’re coming back into your D-zone defensively, simple. Stay on your feet. If the shot hits you, fine, no prob. If you fall and the incoming shot hits you, fine. But if you come back in the zone and go down horizontally of your own accord, no trip, no slip and fall, you dive horizontally in order to block the progress of the puck, either a pass or a shot, that’s a Delay of Game - 2 minutes.
Players are smart - you start calling this in September, it’s gone by Christmas.

I honestly think thatís one of the silliest rule/penalty ideas Iíve heard in a long time. If a team doesnít want itís players doing it for safety reasons then fine tell them that but you canít start giving out penalties for playing defence if you are the forward in that situation you have 2 choices 1 move the puck or 2 get the shot off faster

Just like you can’t start calling a penalty every time someone takes their hand off their stick to put an arm on an opponent - until they did. For a while it was the dreaded ‘parade to the penalty box’. Until it wasn’t. Just like you can’t start calling every single hack and whack from every player. Until they did.
And now it’s no longer a problem.

Well, that’s an upset. My pick for the gold medal is toast.
The US is choked out 1-0 by a passing, puck-possessing Finnish squad.
Does Finland then become the Favourite?

They're the defending champs. Always a favorite in my mind.

You know, the analyst said much the same thing you did. At some point soon the hockey world is going to have to recognize Finland as a hockey power on par with any other.
And like you said, maybe Finland was the favourite all along.

Great observation, if that was USA or even [flame proof underwear on] Canada, the place would have been silent.
