Some of our players from last year were only on the team because we could afford them. If we can pick up some OA talent this year, the fill-ins from last year will be replaced by first year talent from the early rounds.

The numbers indicate that it is clearly a buyers’ market for Overage Players.

OHL Unofficial Overage Numbers:

124 OA players for 54 spots on the 18 teams at or over the limit (3)

Only 2 teams can currently accommodate OA players: Niagara – 2 and Barrie – 1

There could be as many as 70 OA players – minus those heading to the NHL, AHL, ECHL - available for those 3 spots!

The Ice Dogs won't likely have to over-pay for a couple of overage players that can help the young players develop for next year.

Of the OA players available, are there forwards that are rated higher than Johnny Corneil?

It just occurred to me you may have overlooked a significant factor this year: Vegas. With the expansion draft and a draw of talent to a new NHL team, there are bound to be ripples in the AHL and ECHL as the big clubs fill holes from their minor teams. You might see a few less OAs sticking around this year.

Well, 32 of the 70 OA players are NHL drafted looking at the list (2017 2018 Ice Dogs Post #5 ) all those players are rated higher than Corneil.

But, if your glass is half-full, Vegas is going to have a positive effect on the Ice Dogs.

If all 32 of those OA players are gone – those 18 teams affected by the Vegas Factor would be a little weaker this season. Note: 12 of those 32 OA players are in the Eastern Conference.

I hope all 32 OAs – and maybe even a few others on tryouts - have great NHL camps and get started on their pro careers asap!

If the Vegas factor, cleans out the OHL of the all those drafted by NHL teams, that would still leave the OHL with a 38 player surplus for 3 spots.

While we're at it, let’s hope:
• Import Artur Tyanulin (67s) lands a pro contract at his NHL tryout.
• Minnesota assigns Import Dmitri Sokolov (Wolves) to the AHL.
• Mike McLeod (Steelheads) makes the NHL this year!
• Los Angeles assigns Import Jacob Moverare (Steelheads) to David Bell.
• Toronto decides Import Eemeli Rasanen (Kingston) would be better off alongside TL and the Marlies.
• 98 Import Marian Studenic (Hamilton) is promoted to the AHL by New Jersey.

Other teams might be doing the same Johnny Corneil math, looking into their neighbour's OA garden in favour of the homegrown crop.

At the end of OHL training camps, there will be approximately 30 - 35 OA players with no team Junior A team to play for.

The Ice Dogs need to be patient - and not give up anything more than mid to late round picks for the 2 OA players coming in.

Its a nice thought, but sometimes it is tempting to reach for an impact player before someone else does.

No sense overpaying for a one year player in a year where we are in no position to contend.
